If a submission times out or the connection drops, you may not know whether the server applied it. Don’t blindly retry an ambiguous operation that could create a second effect, such as a payment or a new record. First check whether the operation is idempotent, retry with the same supported idempotency key, or use a documented status check to establish what happened.
Why a missing confirmation does not mean the submission failed
A client can lose its connection after a server receives or processes a request but before the response reaches the client. The lack of confirmation tells you what the client observed—not whether the server applied the operation. Retrying a non-idempotent submission in that state can therefore create a duplicate.
HTTP guidance makes the distinction explicit: a client should not automatically retry a non-idempotent request unless it has reason to know the operation is safe to repeat or can detect that the original was never applied. RFC 9110, Section 9.2.2 says: “A client SHOULD NOT automatically retry a request with a non-idempotent method unless it has some means to know that the request semantics are actually idempotent, regardless of the method, or some means to detect that the original request was never applied.”
When is it safe to retry a request after a timeout?
Retry safety depends on the operation’s intended effect and the endpoint’s documented contract—not on whether the user saw a confirmation. An operation is idempotent when repeating the same request has the same intended effect as doing it once. That does not guarantee identical responses or rule out every observable side effect, such as logging.

HTTP method semantics are a useful starting point. RFC 9110 identifies safe methods, PUT, and DELETE as idempotent. But a method name alone does not prove that a particular application endpoint implements the expected behavior. Google Cloud’s HTTP guidance, for example, treats GET, PUT, and DELETE as idempotent and POST and PATCH as neither safe nor idempotent. Check the endpoint documentation rather than assuming every request using a given method behaves alike.
A request that changes state is not necessarily unsafe to retry; the question is whether repeating that exact logical operation could apply the change again. Conversely, a server may support retrying only when a specific precondition or argument is supplied. Google Cloud Storage documents conditional idempotency in which retry safety can depend on such conditions. Review the service’s documented idempotency rules before relying on a retry.

- Reliable 2.4GHz Wireless & Dual Adapters – Enjoy stable, lag-free connection with the included USB receiver and USB-C adapter, effortlessly switching between devices with different ports.
- Full 28-Key Layout with Shortcuts – Dedicated number keys, tab, esc, backspace, = + - * /, % () $, and more streamline financial accounting, spreadsheets, and data entry tasks, boosting your workflow.
- Universal Plug-and-Play Compatibility – Works right out of the box with Windows, PC, laptop, desktop, Surface Pro, and notebook; no driver installation required.
- Slim, Lightweight & Portable – The ultra-slim profile easily slips into a laptop bag or pocket, making it a perfect on-the-go companion for accountants, analysts, and students.
- Important System Note – All keys and hotkeys work seamlessly on Windows system. While on iOS and macOS, all number keys, = + - * / % () $ function perfectly, but hotkeys/shortcut like Numlock, Home, End, Pgup, PgDn,↑←↓→ keys are not supported due to system limitations; this does not affect standard numeric entry.
What to do when you clicked submit but got no confirmation
- Identify the operation and its effect. Determine what state it changes and whether repeating the same logical request could create another payment, record, job, or other effect. Do not treat silence from the server as proof that nothing happened.
- Read the endpoint’s retry contract. Check whether retries are safe, whether the endpoint accepts an idempotency key, and whether safety depends on conditions such as a precondition. Note any key scope, retention period, parameter-matching rules, and which results are stored.
- If supported, retry with the original idempotency key. Create one key for the logical operation and reuse it for its retries. Generating a fresh key for each attempt can make the service treat each retry as a new operation. AWS recommends consistent client-token use and warns against inconsistent key generation. See AWS Well-Architected guidance on idempotent operations.
- If no applicable key or safety guarantee exists, check the operation’s status. Use a documented status endpoint or reconcile against the authoritative state before deciding whether another submission is needed. Retry only when you have a basis to determine the original was not applied or the operation is otherwise safe to repeat.
What an idempotency key does—and what it does not
An idempotency key lets a service recognize repeated attempts as the same logical operation, when that service supports the mechanism and the requests meet its rules. The key is not a universal HTTP feature with identical behavior everywhere: providers define its scope, lifetime, parameter handling, and response behavior.

Stripe’s published API contract illustrates why those details matter. After endpoint execution begins, Stripe says it saves the first status code and response body for a key, including a 500 response, and returns that saved result for repeated requests using the key. It does not save results for validation failures or certain concurrent conflicts. Stripe also says keys may be pruned once they are at least 24 hours old; a pruned key can then be treated as new. Read Stripe’s idempotency documentation for the current rules before implementing retries.

In particular, replaying a saved error is not the same as asking the service to start the operation again. If the first result was an error, follow the provider’s documented recovery process; do not assume that sending the same key will re-run processing. The retention window also matters: a key reused after the provider has discarded it may no longer protect against a duplicate.

- BLUE BACKLIT - 3 backlight modes: full-lighting, breathing, lights-off turn on and off by ”Esc + Del”, bright and evenly distributed backlit keys, makes it easy to find the exactly keys when you are working in dimly lit rooms.
- EXTREME DURABILITY - 10 key usb keypad with never faded ABS keycaps ensures 50 million times keystrokes. Gold-plated interface and magnet ring can to a large degree guarantees stable data transmitting
- WIDELY COMPATIBILITY - Number pad for laptops and desktop computers works with Windows 2000/ XP/ Vista/ 7/ 8/ 10/ 11 operating systems. (Warm Tips: the keypad is not fully compatible with Macbook & Chromebook, the function keys do not work while the number keys part work fine)
- Operation semantics: Is repeating the same logical operation idempotent, and is that guarantee documented for this endpoint?
- Key support: Can the client supply an idempotency key? What identifies the same logical request?
- Key scope and lifetime: How long is the key retained, and within what account, endpoint, or other scope is it unique?
- Request matching: Must retries have identical parameters? What happens if a key is reused with different parameters?
- Stored outcomes: Which results are replayed, including errors, and which failures are not recorded?
- Status lookup: Is there a documented way to find out whether the operation completed?
- Required conditions: Does retry safety depend on a precondition, such as an ETag or another argument?
Also distinguish retryable errors from safe retries. A service may identify a response as retryable while the operation itself remains non-idempotent; retrying can still cause duplicate effects or conflicts. Google Cloud Storage discusses this distinction in its retry strategy guidance.
