If comments seem to disappear after exporting a Google Doc, first check the DOCX in an application that supports Word comments—not just a file preview. Then check whether the missing threads were resolved: Google Docs Product Expert guidance says resolved comments and version history are not available in DOCX for a converted Docs document. Keep the original Google Doc if you need those records.
Check whether the comments are hidden or missing
-
Open the original document in Google Docs and open its comments panel. Check whether the thread is active or resolved; Google says resolved comments remain accessible in the original file. You can also filter comments by status. Google’s comments help explains how to view and manage comments.
-
Download a fresh Word file using File > Download > Microsoft Word (.docx). Google documents this file-type selection workflow, but does not promise that every kind of comment history transfers to DOCX. See Google’s download instructions.

Open the downloaded DOCX in Microsoft Word and inspect its Comments pane. A preview is not a reliable way to determine whether comments are in the file: Google Product Expert community guidance says a preview may not show them even when a comment-capable application can. This is community guidance, not an official Google specification.

Inspect comments in Word
In Word, open the Comments pane and switch to list view to review active and resolved comments. Microsoft notes that comment controls can differ by Word platform and version; its modern comments guidance describes the available views. If the comments appear there, they were not missing from the DOCX; the preview or earlier viewer simply did not display them.
Know what may not transfer from Google Docs
A Google Docs Product Expert responding in the Google Docs Editors Community on August 2, 2020, said resolved comments and version history are not available in DOCX for a converted Docs document. The response also says converting that downloaded DOCX back into Docs does not restore them, because it is essentially a new file. This is volunteer community guidance rather than an official Google product specification, so it does not establish a universal rule for every conversion route or software version. For resolved discussions or version history, retain and return to the original Google Doc.

Preserve comments in a Google Docs copy
If you need a separate Google file rather than a Word export, use File > Make a copy and select Copy comments and suggestions. Google says this copy workflow can include resolved comments and suggestions. It is separate from downloading a DOCX. See Google’s comments help for the copy option.
Print comments that are present in the DOCX
Printing is a separate task from recovering comments. In Word for Windows, first confirm the comments are visible in the document, then use Review > Show Markup and File > Print > Print Markup. This displays and prints markup already in the DOCX; it cannot bring back comments that were not transferred. See Microsoft’s Word for Windows printing instructions.
