Placing an Amazon order starts payment validation, then the item moves into fulfillment and delivery. Amazon may handle the item itself, or a marketplace seller may pack and ship it; the route, updates, and timing depend on the order. A card authorization that appears as pending is not necessarily a completed charge.
What happens to your payment after you place an order?
Amazon says it contacts the card’s issuing bank to confirm the payment method. The bank may place a temporary authorization hold, which reserves funds but is not yet an actual charge. Some banks display authorizations as pending or processing transactions. Amazon’s payment help distinguishes that reserve from a completed charge.

If an order is cancelled or changed before shipment, Amazon may tell the bank it no longer needs the authorization. The bank controls when the reserved funds become available again; Amazon states that release can take 5–7 days, but that is not a guarantee for every bank or account.

For the multi-item order scenario described in its help page, Amazon may request one authorization for the full amount and charge it after all items have shipped or five days after the order date, whichever happens first. This is not a universal payment schedule for every order or payment method.

Who picks, packs, and ships the item?
There are two broad fulfillment paths within Amazon’s store. The seller guide explains that Amazon can fulfill an order, or the marketplace seller can fulfill it using Fulfilled by Merchant. Fulfilled by Merchant means the seller receives the order details and is responsible for packing, shipping, and confirming shipment.

For Amazon-fulfilled orders, Amazon describes fulfillment-center employees beginning to pick and pack an order after it is placed. Eligible items can be gift-wrapped at the customer’s request. That description does not mean every order is handled by Amazon employees; seller-fulfilled orders follow the seller’s process.

How can an Amazon package travel to your doorstep?
Amazon’s public description of its package journey gives an example of its logistics network, not a fixed route for every order. Packed packages may travel on line-haul trailers and, depending on the destination, may pass through an Amazon Air site. A sort center can group packages by ZIP code before forwarding them to a delivery station or a partner facility such as a U.S. Post Office. At a delivery station, packages are sorted by delivery route and loaded onto vehicles.

Amazon says customers receive notifications as packages move toward delivery. Depending on the order, delivery may be to the door or to a pickup location such as an Amazon Locker. Not every package travels by air or through every facility in this example; destination and fulfillment path affect the journey. What do order statuses and delivery estimates tell you?
Amazon’s status definitions for sellers describe Pending as payment being processed or verified, Unshipped as ready for fulfillment, Shipped as marked shipped and trackable, and Cancelled as cancelled. The guide tells sellers not to ship a pending order before payment is confirmed. These are seller-side labels and guidance; they should not be assumed to match every label or display in a buyer’s Orders page. Amazon’s seller status guidance is aimed at sellers.
For seller-fulfilled orders, Amazon says the estimated total delivery time accounts for handling time, transit time, weekends and holidays, and a buffer for carrier delays. This guidance concerns seller delivery settings, not every Amazon delivery promise. For your own order, use the estimate and tracking shown in its order record. What Amazon’s public description does—and does not—show
Amazon’s customer and seller materials explain payment authorization, broad fulfillment responsibilities, selected shipping stages, and seller-side status definitions. They do not disclose a complete technical account of internal order-management software, inventory-selection algorithms, fraud-review logic, or warehouse routing rules. The public package journey is illustrative, so it cannot establish a single route, payment-capture moment, or schedule for every product and country.
