The Buffer Manager in the wclickhouse Python library is intended to collect repeated small inserts in application memory and send them together. It is not a built-in ClickHouse server feature, and it cannot guarantee that a workload will never create a one-row part. ClickHouse has a separate server-side option—asynchronous inserts—for batching compatible inserts when the application cannot do so itself.

Why one-row inserts can create a parts problem

With synchronous inserts into MergeTree-family tables, ClickHouse writes new data parts. An insert that touches multiple partitions can create at least one part per partition, so frequent tiny inserts can produce many small parts. Those parts carry overhead: file handling, sorting and compression, background merges, CPU and I/O use, and, in replicated deployments, Keeper activity. Merges consolidate parts later, but they do not make a stream of tiny writes free.

The goal is therefore to reduce the frequency of small insert operations, not to assume that a buffer eliminates parts. Batch size and partitioning still affect the number of parts created.

What the wclickhouse Buffer Manager does

The project README describes wclickhouse as a Python ORM for ClickHouse built around Pydantic v2, clickhouse-connect and Apache Arrow. It lists its Buffer Manager as a way to group small inserts. The accompanying article describes initializing WClickHouse with use_buffer=True and a buffer_size, for example 10,000, then accumulating calls to insert() in RAM until the threshold triggers a flush. It also mentions calling db.flush() during shutdown.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The 10,000-row value is the author’s example setting, not a ClickHouse recommendation. The article and README describe project behavior; they do not establish durability guarantees, exact flush timing, concurrency behavior or comparative production performance. Check the documentation and API for the particular installed release before relying on this feature.

When it may fit

A library-managed buffer may be convenient when an application already uses wclickhouse and emits individual streaming records. The README itself recommends Arrow for massive ingestion and suggests insert_many() or insert_dataframe() instead of repeated single-row insert() calls when those approaches fit the workload.

Choose where batching should happen

Approach Where data waits Best fit and important consideration
Application-managed batches In application code Use when the application can accumulate rows and control batch size. ClickHouse recommends at least 1,000 rows per insert, ideally 10,000–100,000.
wclickhouse Buffer Manager In the Python library process, according to the project’s description Can simplify grouping individual records for an application using wclickhouse. Verify the feature and its behavior in the installed release; the package listing does not document it in its visible description.
ClickHouse asynchronous inserts In ClickHouse’s server-side buffer Use when client-side batching is impractical. Compatible inserts are buffered and flushed together; data is not queryable until it is flushed.

There is no established universal performance winner between these options. The ClickHouse guidance favors client-side batching where practical, and asynchronous inserts when it is not. Neither the library article nor the project README is an independent benchmark.

Configure asynchronous inserts with failure behavior in mind

ClickHouse’s engineering guidance recommends wait_for_async_insert=1 for production: the client waits for the flush to succeed before receiving acknowledgement, can receive flush errors, and experiences backpressure rather than being told success before the data is flushed. With wait_for_async_insert=0, acknowledgement may arrive while data is still in memory; flush errors can be hidden, and a server failure before flushing carries data-loss risk.

Asynchronous inserts do not make every flush a single part. A flush spanning multiple partitions can create at least one part for each affected partition. The server-side buffer changes where batching occurs, not the underlying role of partitions in part creation.

Check your ClickHouse and package versions

ClickHouse Release 26.3 says asynchronous inserts are enabled by default starting with 26.3 LTS, with automatic batching of small inserts for most users and no configuration change required. That statement should not be assumed for older versions, every deployment or every effective setting; verify the server version and configuration.

A practical decision path

  1. If you can batch in the producer, accumulate rows and send batches. ClickHouse’s guidance is at least 1,000 rows per insert, ideally 10,000–100,000, subject to your latency and workload needs.
  2. If you already use wclickhouse for single-record events, assess its Buffer Manager as an application-side convenience. Confirm the installed version supports the relevant API and understand when buffered data is flushed.
  3. If producer-side batching is impractical, evaluate ClickHouse asynchronous inserts and use wait_for_async_insert=1 when the caller should learn whether the flush succeeded.
  4. For either approach, consider the partitions touched by each insert and monitor part creation and merging. Batching reduces tiny-insert pressure; it does not nullify partition effects.
