Manohar Halappa reports that workloads migrated in two modernization programs reduced infrastructure costs by 30–35%. That is an author-reported result for those workloads—not a general serverless savings rate or an independently audited case study. The published account does not provide the baseline bill, comparison period, workload volumes, or calculation needed to reproduce the figure.
The practical lesson is to find capacity paid for while idle, choose capabilities that can scale independently, and migrate them incrementally. Serverless can lower costs for the right workload, but it can also add service charges and operational complexity.
What does the 30–35% figure actually show?
In his September 20, 2026 DEV Community article, Manohar Halappa says workloads migrated in two modernization programs achieved a 30–35% infrastructure-cost reduction. The account does not establish a dollar baseline, the dates or duration of the comparison, traffic volumes, or the method used to calculate the reduction. Treat the figure as his reported outcome, not a forecast for another organization.
The result is useful as a prompt to examine idle capacity, not as proof that changing an architecture label automatically reduces a bill. A meaningful comparison asks whether the new system costs less to deliver the same useful work while preserving acceptable latency, reliability, and delivery speed.

Which workloads are plausible candidates?
Start with workload behavior and boundaries, not with a decision to “go serverless.” Halappa’s account favors work that is stateless, short-lived, irregular in demand, and separable from the rest of the application. AWS Prescriptive Guidance similarly notes that Lambda can fit services that do not run constantly, while continuously running services may be better suited to containers: Re-architecting as microservices without containers.
Look for idle capacity and independent scaling
Ask: “Where are we paying for capacity that isn’t being used?” and “What is the current utilization?” Examine traffic patterns, CPU and memory use, execution duration, scaling behavior, and how often capacity sits available without doing useful work. A spiky workload with idle periods may benefit from on-demand execution; a workload that stays busy may not.

Check whether a capability has a clear boundary
Identify dependencies, database access, failure behavior, deployment frequency, and business criticality. A useful candidate answers this question: “Which business capability has a clear boundary and a workload that benefits from independent scaling?” If extracting it requires many synchronous calls across the existing application or makes shared data harder to manage, the boundary may not be ready.
How to estimate the cost before migrating
A serverless comparison must include more than function execution. AWS Lambda pricing includes requests and execution duration, with duration charges affected by configured memory. Other AWS services and data transfer can add charges, and actual prices vary by region and configuration. Consult the AWS Lambda Pricing page for current terms rather than relying on an undated price example.

- Complete Accessories: We provide the accessories you need, including 2 x Pallets, 145 x M5*10 Cross Head Screws, 4 x Casters, 4 x M10*50 Expansion Screws,10 x M6*12 Cage Nuts, 1 x Grounding Wire, 1 x User Manual.
- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
AWS cost guidance also identifies execution count, memory allocation, and duration as cost factors and recommends right-sizing: Consider serverless .NET. Halappa’s comparison discussion also calls attention to concurrency, storage, databases, data transfer, observability, and the utilization of the existing infrastructure.
Compare cost per completed unit of work
Set a baseline for the monolith, then measure the candidate system over comparable traffic and operating conditions. Track cost per transaction, request, or processed workload—not just the monthly infrastructure bill. Include adjacent service charges and operational effort where they are material. A lower bill is not a successful saving if latency worsens, failures increase, or the system requires disproportionate support work.

Keep the comparison broad enough to reveal trade-offs
- Utilization: How much capacity is actively used, and how much sits idle?
- Workload shape: How frequently does work arrive, how long does it run, and how much memory does it need?
- Unit economics: What does each completed transaction or unit of processing cost, including related services?
- Performance: What is the latency, including cold-start effects where relevant?
- Resilience: How are failures, retries, and recovery handled?
- Operations: How many independently deployed components, network calls, IAM policies, and observability requirements will the design add?
These are measures to collect, not numeric results established by Halappa’s account. His article does not publish measurements for these comparison dimensions.

How to migrate without turning the monolith into a maze
Extract capabilities progressively behind explicit interfaces. The AWS-oriented examples in Halappa’s article include API Gateway with Lambda for suitable request-driven work, SQS-triggered processing in place of idle polling, Step Functions for multi-stage workflows, and S3-backed event processing for large data operations. These are possible patterns, not a required architecture; fit them to the workload and its failure modes.

- Document the baseline and boundary. Record current utilization, traffic, processing duration, dependencies, database access, failure behavior, deployment cadence, and business criticality for the capability being considered.
- Choose one separable capability. Prefer a workload with independent scaling needs and a well-defined interface. Avoid extracting components merely to increase the service count.
- Design failure handling before cutover. Specify timeouts, bounded retries with backoff, idempotency, and dead-letter handling where appropriate. Make workflow state and failures observable.
- Make infrastructure reproducible. Use infrastructure as code so environments and changes can be recreated consistently.
- Deploy with rollback as a first-class path. Move traffic or processing in a controlled stage, verify behavior against the baseline, and retain a practical route back if reliability or economics deteriorate.
- Re-measure after migration. Compare cost per unit of useful work alongside latency, reliability, and delivery measures under comparable conditions. Continue only when the capability performs acceptably and the economics justify the added complexity.
What costs can erase the savings?
Distributed systems introduce a tax that a single deployable application may not have: more deployments, network calls, failure boundaries, IAM policies, and monitoring needs. An extraction can also increase data transfer or create extra database and storage charges. A poorly designed microservices architecture can therefore cost more financially and operationally than the monolith it replaces.
Halappa’s concise caution is: “Serverless is a tool, not an ideology.” The relevant question is not whether serverless is modern, but whether a particular capability’s demand pattern and operational needs make its total cost and risk acceptable.
