Yes—a browser tool can inspect text when you paste it into a webpage and flag patterns such as API keys, tokens, or passwords. That is different from continuously reading your system clipboard, and neither approach guarantees that every secret will be caught. The key questions are what the tool inspects, when it gets access, which sites it supports, and whether the text stays on your device.
What does “detects what you paste” actually mean?
Paste detection can describe several distinct behaviors. A tool may inspect the content delivered to a webpage during a paste action, read clipboard contents through a browser API, or classify text against rules for sensitive data. These mechanisms have different permission, privacy, and reliability implications.
- Inspecting a paste event: A tool examines text as it is pasted into a supported page or field. This is event-driven; it does not by itself mean the tool watches the clipboard continuously.
- Reading the clipboard: An application asks the browser for clipboard contents. The browser may restrict this access or require user interaction, depending on the context and permissions.
- Classifying text: The tool checks available text for patterns or categories, such as a credential-like string. Classification can happen after a paste is observed, but it is a separate step from obtaining the text.
A claim that a tool “detects what you paste” is incomplete without saying which of these behaviors it uses. It should also identify supported browsers and versions, the permissions requested, and whether inspection happens only on paste or in other circumstances.
Can a browser extension read your clipboard all the time?
Not necessarily. The web Clipboard API is subject to security restrictions; ordinary webpage reads generally require recent user activation and an interaction such as choosing a paste control. Extensions with relevant permissions may have a different access path, so the page’s rules should not be treated as a universal description of extension behavior. MDN documents these access considerations in its Clipboard API overview.

For a specific extension, check its permission list and privacy disclosures. In particular, distinguish permission to inspect text in pages from access to clipboard contents, and find out whether the tool reads only when you paste or can read in other circumstances. A privacy statement is the developer’s claim about its own product, not an independent security audit.
Clipboard-change events versus polling
Repeatedly checking the clipboard, or polling, can be inefficient and privacy-sensitive because an application may keep reading even when the clipboard has not changed. A Chrome for Developers article dated September 23, 2025, described the clipboardchange event as an alternative and said it was available through an origin trial in Chrome and Edge starting with version 140. The article presented standardization as a goal; it does not establish universal or current support across browsers. See Chrome’s discussion of the clipboardchange event for the stated availability and context.

What kinds of sensitive text can paste detection flag?
Tools may look for credential-like patterns, including API keys, access tokens, or passwords. Some may also describe broader sensitive-data categories or use semantic analysis. The exact categories and supported sites vary by product, and a detected pattern is a warning—not proof that the text is a secret.

Pattern-based detection can miss a secret whose format is unfamiliar or altered, and ordinary text can resemble a credential and trigger a false positive. Without documented testing, there is no sound basis to claim a particular tool’s accuracy or to rely on it as a complete safeguard. Avoid pasting real credentials into a test field; use non-sensitive examples instead.

What should you check before installing a paste-protection extension?
Evaluate the tool against the situations in which you actually paste sensitive information. Store listings and privacy policies can explain intended behavior, but they are vendor statements rather than independent evaluations.
- Content categories: Identify what it says it detects—such as keys, tokens, or passwords—and whether it uses rules, semantic analysis, or both.
- Supported contexts: Check which browsers, sites, and input fields are covered. A feature on a limited set of AI chat sites does not imply coverage across every webpage.
- Data flow: Determine whether analysis is on-device or uses a remote service, what data is transmitted, and whether anything is retained.
- Permissions: Review the requested browser permissions and how they relate to the stated behavior.
- User control: Find out whether a warning lets you cancel, proceed, or redact text, and what happens when detection is uncertain.
- Limitations: Look for an explanation of false positives and missed detections. Do not interpret the absence of a warning as evidence that pasted text is safe.

The following are examples, not a ranking. Their descriptions come from their own listings or policies; the available information does not establish a common independent accuracy evaluation.

- Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
- Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
- Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
- Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
- Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
- SecureIntent: Its Chrome Web Store listing says it warns before users paste API keys, tokens, or passwords into websites, including AI chats, and that detection runs on the device. The listing also describes user actions after a warning. These are the listing’s claims, not independently verified results: SecureIntent’s Chrome Web Store listing.
- PasteGuard: Its privacy policy says it inspects text pasted, typed, or submitted on eight AI chat sites: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Perplexity, Grok, and Mistral Le Chat. The policy lists sensitive-data categories and describes an advanced semantic feature using Chrome’s built-in Gemini Nano. These details are the vendor’s statements and may change: PasteGuard’s privacy policy.
- CopyCaution: Its Chrome Web Store listing describes local protection and says it does not read the general clipboard or clipboard history. That stated focus is not the same as scanning pasted text for secrets: CopyCaution’s Chrome Web Store listing.
Check each product’s current listing and policy before relying on those descriptions. Their capabilities are not interchangeable, and the information above does not establish which is most accurate.

Clipboard content may include HTML markup in addition to plain text. Chrome’s documentation warns that applications opting into unsanitized HTML must sanitize it themselves because clipboard markup can create security risks. A tool should make clear whether it examines plain text only or also reads HTML and other formats; handling richer content is not automatically safer or more comprehensive. See Chrome’s guidance on unsanitized HTML in the Async Clipboard API.

How to reduce the chance of exposing a secret
- Use the narrowest safeguard that fits: If you install a paste-protection extension, confirm the browser, sites, and input contexts it supports before using it for that purpose.
- Review before pasting: Remove credentials and other confidential values from text you do not need to share. Replace them with non-sensitive placeholders when asking for help.
- Treat warnings as a checkpoint: Cancel or redact when a warning identifies a value you did not intend to disclose. If there is no warning, do not assume the content has been cleared.
- Check what happens to inspected text: Read the permission and privacy disclosures to understand whether analysis is local, whether any content is sent to a service, and what the tool says it retains.
