HPC clusters use InfiniBand to move data between compute nodes with low communication overhead, helping distributed applications spend less time waiting on the network. Its switched fabric, RDMA support, and hardware-assisted transport are designed for workloads that exchange data frequently or move large volumes. It is a common HPC choice, not a requirement: Ethernet with RoCE also supports RDMA, and the best fit depends on workload performance and the team’s operating environment.
Why the network matters in HPC
High-performance computing (HPC) applications divide work across multiple compute nodes. Those nodes must exchange data while solving a problem, and some applications also synchronize repeatedly. When communication is frequent, the network can become a limit on time-to-solution even if the processors are powerful.
Two network characteristics matter in different ways:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Latency is the time it takes for data to travel between endpoints. It matters especially when a program sends many small messages or frequently waits for other nodes to reach a synchronization point.
- Bandwidth is the capacity to move data over time. It matters more for large transfers, such as exchanging substantial blocks of data between nodes.
Application performance depends on the pattern and volume of communication, not just a link’s advertised rate. A workload dominated by small exchanges may respond differently from one that transfers large datasets, so a network’s value should be evaluated against the applications it will run.

What InfiniBand does
The InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA) defines InfiniBand as “an industry standard, channel-based, switched fabric interconnect architecture for server and storage connectivity.” In practical terms, it is a dedicated fabric connecting servers and other systems through compatible adapters, switches, and links.
A key capability is Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA). IBTA describes RDMA as technology that lets data transfer directly between the memory of remote systems, GPUs, and storage without involving their CPUs. That is a simplified description: RDMA is intended to reduce CPU involvement in data movement, not to guarantee that no CPU work is involved in every implementation.

- Host Interface: PCI Express 5.0 x16
- Total Number of Ports: 1
- Expansion Slot Type: OSFP
- Media Type Supported: Optical Fiber
- Maximum Data Transfer Rate: 400 Gbit/s
InfiniBand also includes transport and fabric-management features intended to help distributed systems communicate efficiently. Together, these capabilities make it suitable for clusters where communication overhead can affect application scaling. They do not guarantee a particular application speedup; that depends on the workload, system configuration, and how the fabric is operated.
InfiniBand and Ethernet with RoCE
InfiniBand is not the only way to build an RDMA-capable HPC network. RoCE—RDMA over Converged Ethernet—provides RDMA over Ethernet. IBTA defines it as “an industry standard transport that enables Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) to operate on ordinary Ethernet layer 2 and 3 networks.” The meaningful comparison is therefore between two fabric approaches, not between RDMA and Ethernet that cannot support RDMA.
Neither option is universally faster or cheaper. Compare them against the target applications and the practical needs of the organization:
- Application performance: Benchmark latency, bandwidth, and scaling with representative workloads. Small-message exchanges, bulk transfers, and synchronization-heavy applications can respond differently.
- Congestion and loss management: Consider how each proposed fabric handles congestion and what configuration and monitoring it requires. The result depends on the specific design and workload.
- Operations: Account for the team’s familiarity with the fabric’s management tools, troubleshooting practices, and support arrangements.
- Infrastructure fit: Check compatibility with existing adapters, switches, cabling, and operational processes.
- Total cost: Compare the complete system—including equipment, links, deployment, and support—rather than assuming either architecture always costs less.
What current TOP500 figures show—and do not show
In its report on the June 2026 TOP500 list, the InfiniBand Trade Association counted 293 systems connected with InfiniBand and 83 using Ethernet with RoCE. It reported 376 systems combined, or 75% of that list. These are IBTA’s figures summarizing the June 2026 edition, not figures attributed here directly to TOP500. They show that both fabric approaches are represented among ranked systems; they do not prove that one is best for every HPC cluster.

What a working InfiniBand fabric requires
InfiniBand is a system choice, not a cable-only upgrade. Host adapters, switch ports, links, and fabric management must work together. Before selecting components, verify:
- The server supports the intended host channel adapter (HCA) or network adapter, including its form factor and interface.
- The adapter and switch ports use compatible InfiniBand generations and link rates.
- The cable or optical transceiver matches the port, connector, required rate, and distance.
- The cluster has a plan for fabric configuration, management, monitoring, and support.
For example, NVIDIA’s ConnectX-7 OCP 3.0 manual identifies an InfiniBand-capable adapter in that particular OCP form factor. That does not make it a general recommendation: server compatibility, available slots, switch generation, port speed, link type, and reach all need to be checked for the intended deployment.
When InfiniBand is a sensible choice
InfiniBand is worth evaluating when an HPC workload communicates often enough that network latency, bandwidth, or CPU overhead materially affects time-to-solution, and the organization can support a compatible fabric. RoCE is also worth evaluating when RDMA is desirable and an Ethernet-based design fits existing infrastructure and operations.
Choose using representative application benchmarks and an end-to-end design review. A result from one workload or a headline link rate cannot establish how a different cluster will perform.
