A digital media server makes audio, video, photos, or other media available to devices over a network. It provides the content; a separate player or renderer handles playback. A computer can serve this role, so a dedicated appliance or NAS is not required by the definition.
What does “digital media server” mean?
In everyday use, a digital media server is hardware or software that shares media over a network so other devices can find and access it. In UPnP and DLNA terminology, a Digital Media Server (DMS) is more specifically an UPnP device implementing the UPnP MediaServer device type. Microsoft’s protocol glossary defines a DMS in those terms.
The standard does not require a special-purpose box. A PC is one example of a home media server in the UPnP MediaServer device template. What makes a device a server is the role it performs—providing media to other devices—not its shape or product category.
What does a media server do?
A UPnP MediaServer makes its media library discoverable and browsable through a service called ContentDirectory. Once a receiving device selects content, the server and device may use a compatible transfer protocol and data format to deliver it. The receiving device then plays or renders the media; serving content and playing it are distinct tasks.

- 【One data Center Across Your Devices】Keep files from desktops, laptops, phones, tablets, and other devices together instead of scattered across cloud accounts and external drives. Access, back up, organize, and share data across Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, web browsers, and compatible smart TVs—ideal for creators and advanced home users working across multiple devices.
That distinction matters because the word “server” does not promise that every file will play on every device. Compatibility depends on the formats and transfer methods supported by both the server and the receiving device.
How do DMS, DMP, DMR, and DMC differ?
| Role | What it does |
|---|---|
| DMS (Digital Media Server) | Provides or exposes media for networked devices to access. |
| DMP (Digital Media Player) | Finds and plays media as a player role. |
| DMR (Digital Media Renderer) | Renders or plays media sent to it. |
| DMC (Digital Media Controller) | Can direct a renderer to start streaming content from a server. |
These are defined DLNA-related device roles, not necessarily four separate physical products. A DMS itself does not provide AV rendering, according to the UPnP device template; playback belongs to the player or renderer role.

Do you need a NAS or dedicated server?
No. The definition is about making media available over a network, not owning a particular type of hardware. A computer can act as the server, and a dedicated appliance is optional. A NAS may be one possible host in a home setup, but the cited standards do not establish compatibility for any particular NAS, TV, or software package.
When choosing a way to host a library, consider whether it supports the protocols and formats your playback devices need, whether it has enough storage, whether it can stay available when you want to watch or listen, and how much setup and upkeep it requires. Those are practical selection criteria, not additional requirements in the definition.

Is a digital media server the same as a streaming service?
Not necessarily. “Digital media server” describes a role for providing media over a network. It can refer to a setup serving a personal library, such as files stored on a computer. The term by itself does not specify whether the content is personal, licensed, local, or hosted remotely, or identify any particular service.

Yes. The UPnP MediaServer device template describes the device role and services such as ContentDirectory. ISO lists ISO/IEC 29341-20-3:2017, Media server device; ISO says that edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2025 and remains current.
