For a one-time handoff, start with the built-in sharing feature for your device pair: AirDrop for Apple devices, Quick Share for Android and Windows, or Nearby sharing between Windows PCs. If the devices are apart, use cloud sharing or sync; for an offline handoff, removable storage may work if both devices support it.
Choose a transfer method for your devices
| Method | Works with | Connection and distance | Documented limits or controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirDrop | Nearby Apple devices | Uses Bluetooth Low Energy to find devices and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi to transfer. Apple says the direct Wi-Fi connection does not require internet access or a wireless access point. | Visibility and contacts affect who can find a device. Apple recommends it for a small selection of files; limits for other file counts are not stated in the linked guide. |
| Quick Share | Android devices and Windows PCs | Nearby-device sharing; Google’s troubleshooting advises bringing devices within 30 centimeters. | The receiver normally accepts the transfer. Google documents visibility choices including Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one; a general file-count or size limit is not stated. |
| Nearby sharing | Supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs | Uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Windows 11 can use Wi-Fi when both PCs are on the same private Wi-Fi network; otherwise it may use Bluetooth. | Both PCs need the feature enabled. “Everyone nearby” reveals the PC name and Bluetooth MAC address to nearby devices. A file-count or size limit is not stated. |
| Phone Link | Qualifying Android devices and Windows PCs | Transfers between paired devices; its documentation does not establish that it works without a network connection. | Drag and drop supports up to 100 files at a time, with no file larger than 512 MB. Folders and cloud-backed files are excluded from this feature. |
| Cloud sharing or sync | Devices that can access the same cloud service | Useful when devices are apart; access depends on the service and connection available to each device. | Sharing permissions vary by service. No universal file-count or size limit is established here. |
| Removable storage | Devices with compatible connectors and file-system support | Physical handoff; no internet connection is needed for the handoff. | Compatibility depends on both devices. No universal file-count or size limit is established here. |
There is no sourced, apples-to-apples speed comparison among these methods, so choose by compatibility, distance, privacy, and whether you want a one-time transfer or continuing access.
How do you send files between Apple devices?
Use AirDrop for a nearby handoff between Apple devices. Apple’s Platform Security guide says AirDrop uses Bluetooth Low Energy for discovery and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi for transfers, with an encrypted TLS connection. The direct Wi-Fi connection does not need an internet connection or wireless access point.
- On both devices, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, then enable AirDrop.
- On the sending device, select the file and choose AirDrop from the share sheet.
- Choose the receiving device. The recipient may need to accept the transfer.
AirDrop visibility and contact settings influence discoverability. Apple describes Contacts Only as the default in the configuration covered by its security guide; a recipient who is not recognized through contacts may not appear as expected. Choose a visibility setting appropriate to the handoff, then turn AirDrop off or restrict visibility afterward if you do not need it open.

How do you transfer files between Android and Windows?
Quick Share: a built-in nearby-sharing option
Google documents Quick Share for Android devices and Windows PCs. On most Windows PCs, install Google’s Quick Share app; for Samsung PCs, Google directs users to Samsung’s app in the Microsoft Store. On Android, use Quick Share from the device’s sharing options. Google’s instructions are available in Share files between Android & Windows with Quick Share.

- Make sure Quick Share is installed and enabled on both devices.
- On the sending device, select the file, open the share options, and choose Quick Share. On Windows, you can also select or drag files into the Quick Share app.
- Choose the receiving device and accept the transfer on that device. Google says transfers between devices signed in to the same Google account are accepted automatically.
Google offers visibility settings for Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, or No one, and recommends Contacts or Your devices for more private sharing. If the other device does not appear, check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Quick Share visibility, and whether the feature is installed and enabled on both devices. Some office Wi-Fi networks block device-to-device sharing; Google suggests trying a phone hotspot as one possible workaround. For troubleshooting, Google recommends bringing the devices within 30 centimeters. These instructions do not establish that Quick Share always works offline or on every Windows PC. For Android-side steps, see Use Quick Share on your Android device.

For the documented drag-and-drop feature, you can move up to 100 files at a time, with a maximum of 512 MB per file. Folders and cloud-backed files are excluded. Only locally saved files can be transferred as files; sharing a cloud-stored item sends a link instead. These limits apply to Phone Link’s documented drag-and-drop feature, not to AirDrop, Quick Share, or other transfer methods.
Phone Link also supports cross-device copy and paste for text and images on qualifying devices. Images larger than 1 MB are resized, so clipboard sharing is not a substitute for transferring an original full-size image or arbitrary files.

How do you share files between two Windows PCs?
Use Windows Nearby sharing when both PCs support it and have the feature enabled. Microsoft says supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs can use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. In Windows 11, Wi-Fi may be used when both PCs are on the same private Wi-Fi network; otherwise the feature may use Bluetooth. Follow Microsoft’s current Nearby sharing instructions for the supported version of Windows.
- Enable Nearby sharing on both PCs and choose whether to share with everyone nearby or only your own devices.
- On the sending PC, use the file’s Share option and select the receiving PC.
- Accept the transfer on the receiving PC if prompted.
“Everyone nearby” exposes the PC name and Bluetooth MAC address to nearby devices, according to Microsoft; choose the narrower option if that is not acceptable. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Check your PC’s Windows version and support status before relying on legacy Windows 10 instructions.

What if the devices are not near each other?
Use a cloud service when you need to reach a file remotely or keep it available on multiple devices. You can upload a file and share a link, or use sync to make it available across devices. Microsoft’s Windows guidance describes sharing OneDrive files through a link or by inviting specific people; see Share files in Windows.
A cloud link provides access rather than a direct nearby handoff. Review the service’s sharing controls and choose the intended recipients: a link should not be assumed private simply because you sent it to yourself. For a one-time transfer between devices in the same place, a nearby-sharing feature avoids the extra step of uploading and retrieving the file.
When does removable storage make sense?
A USB-C flash drive can be a practical offline handoff, especially for many files or a device pairing without a suitable built-in sharing feature. It is not universal: check that both devices support the drive’s connector and file system, and that the phone or computer can access external storage. Apple’s AirDrop guidance also points people moving many files toward storage devices, servers, or cloud services; it does not establish compatibility for a particular drive or device.
Quick Recap
Why might the receiving device not appear?
- Check the pair. AirDrop is for Apple devices; Quick Share covers Android and Windows; Windows Nearby sharing is for supported Windows PCs. Phone Link has its own OS and app requirements.
- Check radios and feature settings. For nearby sharing, confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on where required, and that the sharing feature is enabled on both devices.
- Check visibility. A device set to a restricted audience may not be discoverable to the sender. Adjust visibility only as needed, then restore a more private setting.
- Check distance and network policy. Move devices closer. Google recommends 30 centimeters during Quick Share troubleshooting; a managed office Wi-Fi network may block device-to-device sharing.
- Change the route if needed. Try a phone hotspot if appropriate, or use cloud sharing or compatible removable storage when local discovery is unavailable.
