To let players shape enemy routes with tower placements, calculate a shared distance field from the goal, then make each ground enemy move toward a neighboring cell with a lower distance. Rebuild the field when the maze changes, and reject any placement that would cut off the entrance or trap an enemy already on the map. Nightdrive Labs describes this approach for Null Grid, a 32-by-18 tower-defense map with 576 cells.
Why use a shared distance field?
In a tower-defense map where many enemies head for the same goal, running a separate path search for every enemy repeats work. A distance field instead records the cost of reaching the goal from each traversable cell. Enemies consult that shared field and step toward a neighboring cell with a lower distance, accounting for movement cost.
Red Blob Games describes this pattern as a fit for tower defense, where many units share a destination and player-placed towers change the available routes: Flow Field Pathfinding for Tower Defense. The field can guide different enemies from their current positions without calculating a complete route independently for each one.

Nightdrive Labs describes Null Grid in Void Parry’s tower-defense mode as an open 32-by-18 grid, with an entry on the left and a core on the right. Towers occupy cells as walls, so the player shapes the route. The dimensions yield 576 cells.

The described implementation runs Dijkstra’s algorithm from the exit over eight neighboring cells. It assigns a cost of 1.41 to diagonal steps. To prevent a unit from slipping through the corner between two blocked cells, diagonal movement is disallowed when either cell touching that corner is blocked. The same rule must apply both when building the field and when moving enemies; otherwise, the route calculation and actual movement can disagree. These are choices in Nightdrive Labs’ implementation, not universal requirements for every game.
The article uses a plain O(n²) Dijkstra search. Nightdrive Labs reports that it runs “in well under a millisecond” on this 576-cell map, and that the field is recalculated only when a tower is built or sold. This is an author-reported result, not an independent benchmark or a general performance guarantee. The article says a larger grid would need a real heap to avoid the naive search’s scaling costs.

Prevent placements that break the route
A placement can be unreachable from the entrance yet still trap a ground enemy already inside the map. Validation therefore needs to preserve a path for both cases. Nightdrive Labs’ implementation temporarily blocks the proposed tower cell and runs breadth-first search from the exit.
- Check the target cell. Refuse placement directly on an enemy.
- Test the proposed maze. Temporarily mark the cell blocked and search outward from the exit.
- Check every required starting position. Reject the placement if the entry or any ground enemy already on the grid cannot reach the exit.
- Explain the rejection. Return a reason the game can show to the player rather than silently ignoring the placement.
When a tower is built or sold, the described system rebuilds the field. Ground enemies already on the map receive routes from their current cells; enemies not yet on the field use the shared route from the entry. Flying enemies ignore the field.

Show the proposed route before a tower is built
A route preview helps players understand how a placement will change the maze before they spend funds. In Nightdrive Labs’ implementation, hovering over an unoccupied cell tests the proposed blockage and draws the resulting route as a dashed yellow line. The preview is recalculated when the hovered cell or maze changes.
The article also reports a test comparing the preview route with the route after placement. It does not provide test output, and the result has not been independently reproduced here, so treat this as a test described by the article rather than an independently verified guarantee.

- EASY TO SET UP, EASY TO LEARN: Fire Tower takes seconds to set up and minutes to learn. The game is highly accessible because of its intuitive rules and visual instructions that show how each card works.
- UNIQUE THEME AND GAMEPLAY: Fire Tower brings players into a unique world of competitive firefighting. Use real firefighting techniques to defend your tower from the growing flames and take control of nature to send the fire towards your opponents to claim victory. Each turn, you must spread the fire in the direction of the wind and then play one of your action cards. Extinguish the blaze with fire engines, dispatch smoke jumpers, and build firebreaks. Harness the destructive force of nature to spread the flames away from your tower and towards your opponents.
- STRATEGIC AND FAST-PACED with HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Fire Tower takes 15-30 minutes to play. Every turn is a tense decision, as players must adjust to changing conditions in the forest and the plans of their opponents. Downtime is minimal, and players stay in the game even after their towers are destroyed, continuing to play as the vengeful Shadow of the Wood with special powers and a new path to victory. Try playing free-for-all or battle in teams of two to change up the strategy of the game.
- VIBRANT ARTWORK AND COMPONENTS: The game features original watercolors by fine artist Kevin Ruelle. The vivid colors perfectly match the beautiful, unique components and create a highly tactile experience that fully immerses players in the theme of the game. The game’s deluxe components include 135 glimmering fire gems, a printed cloth bag, custom meeples, an engraved wind die, and more.
- THE PERFECT GIFT: This game is a great gift for gamers, teens, adults and kids. It’s easy to introduce to new players, but has enough strategic depth to engage gamers as well, making it the perfect fit for family game night, Thanksgiving, or your next weekly get-together.
Balance maze-building against damage
Every tower used as a wall consumes funds that could otherwise buy damage. A longer route may give defensive towers more time to attack, but that benefit must justify the cost of the towers shaping it. Nightdrive Labs mentions cheaper barriers as a possible design tool, but gives no prices or quantified balance results; the tradeoff should be tuned to the game’s own economy.
When a grid-graph library may fit better
For Apple-platform projects, Apple’s GameplayKit offers a grid-graph model: represent the map as a grid graph and remove wall nodes so paths go around them. See Apple’s GameplayKit Programming Guide: Pathfinding and GKGridGraph documentation. This is a platform-specific option, not a measured performance comparison with Null Grid’s custom distance field.
