To stop an Android screen from changing direction when you turn the phone, open Quick Settings and tap Auto-rotate. On a Samsung Galaxy, tap the orientation control until it shows Portrait or Landscape instead. The exact labels and menus depend on the device and Android version.
Turn off auto-rotate in Quick Settings

Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. On Google-documented devices, swiping down with two fingers opens the full panel in one step.

Find the Auto-rotate tile. If it is not visible, swipe through the tiles or open the full panel.

Tap Auto-rotate to turn automatic screen rotation off. The screen should stay in its current orientation as you turn the device.

Android menus and Quick Settings layouts vary by manufacturer and version. Google notes that some steps differ by device, and older Android devices may use different instructions. Google’s Android guide to Quick Settings and device settings explains the general controls.
Use the Settings app on Pixel and other Google-documented devices
If you cannot find the tile, open Settings > Display & touch > Auto-rotate screen and switch the setting off. If your phone uses different menu names, search Settings for “auto-rotate.” Google documents this path for Pixel and its Android help guidance; manufacturer-customized devices may differ. Google Accessibility Help’s screen-rotation instructions give the setting path.

Lock rotation on a Samsung Galaxy

Swipe down from the top right of the screen to open Quick Settings, as described in Samsung’s current Galaxy instructions.

Tap the orientation control. When automatic rotation is on, it reads Auto rotate.

Tap it to lock the display. Choose Portrait to keep it upright or Landscape to keep it sideways. If the control is missing, use the Quick Settings edit or pencil control to add it back.
Samsung documents the Galaxy-specific labels and control in its guide to turning screen rotation on or off.

What if the screen still rotates—or does not rotate?

Check the control’s state. Make sure Auto-rotate is off. On a Galaxy, the locked state appears as Portrait or Landscape, not Auto rotate.

Check whether only one app is affected. Some apps are designed to stay in portrait or landscape, so their behavior does not necessarily mean the phone’s global setting failed.

Try basic troubleshooting if rotation is not working as expected. Samsung recommends checking the orientation control, installing available software updates, and restarting the device. Its Galaxy screen-rotation troubleshooting guide covers these checks. A factory reset is a last resort, not a reasonable first step for changing this setting; Samsung warns that it erases personal information.
Pixel’s manual Rotate button and accessibility
On Pixel phones, turning off auto-rotate does not necessarily remove every rotation option. Google documents a manual Rotate control that can appear in a screen corner when the device is turned. Tap it only when you want to change orientation. This behavior is documented for Pixel; do not assume every Android manufacturer offers the same control. Google Pixel Phone Help describes Pixel display settings.
Google Accessibility Help advises turning auto-rotate off for TalkBack users because rotating the screen can interrupt spoken feedback. Its screen-rotation guidance includes the accessibility note.
Foldables may have posture-specific rotation settings
Some foldable devices can offer rotation preferences based on whether the device is folded or unfolded. Availability depends on the Android build and manufacturer configuration; it is not a universal Android setting. Android’s platform documentation says posture-based preferences are supported beginning with Android 13 and notes an implementation change in Android 16 QPR1.
