CoTally is presented by its developer as a family expense-tracking progressive web app (PWA) for sharing household budgets while keeping personal spending private. Its described design combines Supabase-based access controls, offline expense entry queued in the browser, and conversion into a household base currency. These are features described by the developer, not independently audited or tested guarantees.
What CoTally is designed to do
In his October 1, 2026 article, developer Levin Siju describes CoTally as a household finance app for tracking shared expenses, managing budgets, balancing debts, and converting currencies. Its intended audience is families or households that want members to see common costs without exposing every member’s personal finances.
The article gives groceries, utilities, and dining out as examples of shared spending. It says personal spending, private debts, and individual savings goals are meant to remain hidden from other household members. AED, INR, USD, EUR, GBP, and SAR are examples of currencies the developer considered for international households; the article does not present them as a complete supported-currency list.
The developer says the app is live at cotally.vercel.app and free to use. That is a time-sensitive statement from the project article, not confirmation of current availability, pricing terms, or service guarantees. A similarly named iCloud-based app also appears online, but the available information does not establish that it is the same product.

How the privacy model is supposed to work
CoTally’s article describes household expenses as visible to members while personal financial records are restricted through Supabase Row-Level Security (RLS). RLS can enforce which rows a signed-in user may access, but mentioning RLS alone does not show that an application’s policies are correct or that every route to sensitive data is protected.
Supabase’s official security guidance says to enable RLS on exposed tables and configure least-privilege policies. It permits a publishable key in frontend code when RLS is used, but says service-role and secret keys must never be exposed in frontend code because those keys bypass RLS.

The project article does not document CoTally’s actual policies, household membership checks, table grants, invitation handling, threat model, encryption approach, or retention rules. It therefore cannot establish that the deployed app is audited, end-to-end encrypted, or completely private. Anyone considering it for sensitive records should look for clear answers about these controls rather than treating the RLS label as a privacy certification.
What happens when you add an expense offline
The developer describes a Workbox-powered PWA that precaches static app assets and caches recent transactions and category data locally. For an expense entered without a connection, the stated flow is:

- The app assigns the expense a local ID and stores it in a queue in the browser’s localStorage.
- The entry appears in the transaction feed with a waiting-to-sync status.
- When the browser reconnects, a sync hook sends queued expenses sequentially to Supabase and replaces local entries with permanent database records.
This is the published design, not an independent reliability test. The article does not explain how the app handles simultaneous edits from two devices, rejected uploads, retries that fail, or browser storage that is cleared or evicted. If an expense is important, check that it has synced before relying on it as a durable record.
How multi-currency totals are described
CoTally’s article says it fetches exchange rates from open.er-api.com, keeps rates in memory to reduce repeat requests, and calculates an amount_base value in the household’s selected base currency. If the household changes its base currency, the developer says past records are migrated and budget progress recalculated.

The article does not specify how often rates refresh, which rate timestamp applies to a transaction, whether the original amount and rate are retained, how rounding works, or how offline entries are converted. It also does not describe an audit trail for historical conversions. As a result, the description does not establish exact real-time conversion or accounting- or tax-grade records.

Quick-add shortcuts and the published technology stack
The developer reports a Supabase Edge Function named quick-add and shortcuts for iOS and Android. The described shortcut collects an amount, category, and note, then sends a small payload to the server. A contextual category dictionary is said to map terms such as “Stationary” to Education, “Shein” to Shopping, and “Karak” to Dining.

The project article lists this implementation stack:
- Frontend: React 18, Vite, and TypeScript.
- Interface and visualizations: Tailwind CSS, shadcn/ui, Radix UI primitives, Lucide Icons, Framer Motion, and Recharts.
- Backend and data access: Supabase PostgreSQL, Supabase Auth, and RLS.
- Fetching and offline support: TanStack React Query, VitePWA/Workbox, and a localStorage event queue.
These are components in the published description. The available material does not include a code audit, architecture diagram, reproducible benchmark, or independent confirmation that the deployed app currently matches the article. The developer also describes the app shell as opening offline in “0ms” and quick-add logging as taking under two seconds, but gives no measurement method, device, or network conditions for those performance claims.
What to check before relying on a family expense tracker
CoTally’s described feature set can be assessed more usefully by checking the details that determine whether it fits a household’s needs:
- Visibility: Which records are shared, which remain private, and how are membership and access changes enforced?
- Offline recovery: How can you tell an entry has synced, and what happens if an upload fails or local browser data disappears?
- Currency history: Does the app retain the original amount and the rate used, with a timestamp, or only the converted household total?
- Data handling: What is stored in the browser versus on the service, and what controls govern retention and access?
- Verification: Have the code, access policies, and deployed behavior been independently reviewed?
For CoTally specifically, the project article explains intended behavior but does not resolve those questions in detail. Its features should therefore be understood as the developer’s account of the design, not evidence of a controlled comparison with other apps or of independently verified privacy and sync behavior.
