United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) is a Taiwan-based semiconductor foundry that manufactures integrated circuits designed by other companies. It focuses on logic and specialty process technologies; it is not a consumer-electronics brand selling UMC-branded chips.
What does UMC do?
UMC provides chip fabrication services: customers design integrated circuits, and UMC manufactures them in its semiconductor fabs. Its stated process offerings include logic and mixed-signal, embedded high-voltage, embedded non-volatile memory, RF SOI, and BCD technologies. These specialty processes serve a range of electronics applications.

UMC says it was founded in 1980 as Taiwan’s first semiconductor company, spun off from the state-owned Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), and changed from an integrated device manufacturer (IDM) to a pure-play foundry in 1995. Where does UMC operate, and how large is its production footprint?
According to its company overview, UMC has 12 fabs in production and combined capacity of more than 400,000 wafers per month on a 12-inch-equivalent basis. The overview lists four 12-inch fabs, seven 8-inch fabs, and one 6-inch fab. Most of its 12-inch and 8-inch fabs and core research and development are in Taiwan, with additional facilities elsewhere in Asia. The same overview reports approximately 20,000 employees worldwide and seven global sales offices; these, too, are figures stated by UMC rather than independently verified counts.

What were UMC’s 2025 financial results?
UMC reported consolidated revenue of NT$237,553 million, net income attributable to parent shareholders of NT$41,716 million, and earnings per share of NT$3.34 for 2025. These are 2025 results, not a measure of the company’s performance in 2026. The company’s investor-relations overview also reports a 29.0% gross margin and an 18.5% operating margin for 2025. Where is UMC listed?
