A DVI port is a video connector that can carry digital video, analog video, or both, depending on its pin layout and the device’s implementation. DVI usually carries video only, so don’t assume it also sends audio. To know whether a cable or adapter will work, check the DVI type on both devices and the resolution and refresh rate supported by the complete connection.

What a DVI port does

DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface. It is a family of connectors used to send video from a source, such as a computer, to a display. The connector’s pinout indicates which signals it can carry; the label “DVI” alone does not tell you whether a port supports digital video, analog video, or both. Plugable explains this distinction in its DVI overview.

DVI typically carries video, not audio. If your display needs sound, plan on a separate audio connection unless the device documentation explicitly says otherwise.

How DVI-D, DVI-I, and DVI-A differ

Type Signal carried What to know
DVI-D Digital video only Available in single-link and dual-link versions. It cannot provide analog VGA output through a passive adapter.
DVI-I Digital and analog video May support a DVI-to-VGA connection when the source’s analog output and a suitable adapter are used. Check whether its digital connection is single-link or dual-link.
DVI-A Analog video only A rare term; the Digital Display Working Group FAQ says DVI-A is not part of the DVI 1.0 specification.

Avid’s DVI connector guide also describes the practical differences among these types. The shape and pin arrangement can help identify a connector, but verify the device specifications rather than relying on appearance alone.

What single-link and dual-link mean

Single-link and dual-link describe digital link capacity, not whether a DVI connection is analog or digital. A dual-link setup adds a second TMDS link to increase available bandwidth. The Digital Display Working Group’s basic-information FAQ, dated October 11, 2008 and reproduced on Scribd, lists 165 MHz for single-link and 2 × 165 MHz for dual-link. It gives example modes of 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz or 1280 × 1024 at 85 Hz for single-link, and 2048 × 1536 at 60 Hz or 1920 × 1080 at 85 Hz for dual-link: DDWG terminology and FAQ. These are examples from that FAQ, not guarantees for every combination of equipment.

A port or cable with a dual-link layout does not ensure that a particular high-resolution mode will work. The source, display, cable, and any adapter all need to support the required configuration. Dell describes a setup requiring a dual-link display, cable, and graphics output to reach 2560 × 1600; consult the documentation for your exact models before applying that figure to another system: Dell support guidance.

How to check whether a DVI cable or adapter will work

  1. Identify both ports. Check the source and display manuals or specifications to determine whether each port is DVI-D, DVI-I, or another connector type.
  2. Confirm digital link support. If you need a particular digital mode, check whether both devices and the cable support single-link or dual-link as required.
  3. Verify the target resolution and refresh rate. Use the device specifications for the complete source-to-display connection, including any adapter. A connector’s shape alone does not establish the supported mode.
  4. Check the signal direction and conversion. A passive DVI-to-VGA adapter requires analog output from the source, such as an analog-capable DVI-I port. A digital-only DVI-D output cannot provide VGA analog video through a passive adapter.
  5. Choose the cable to match the confirmed setup. Buy a DVI cable, including a DVI-D dual-link cable when needed, only after confirming the supported ports and display mode. A dual-link cable cannot add capability missing from the source or display.
