A comment can earn attention and invite an email signup—but only if it helps the conversation before asking for anything. Answer the point at hand, then offer a clearly related resource or email as an optional next step. A comment is not a subscription: readers should choose to sign up through a separate form.

Write a comment worth reading on its own

Join discussions where your intended audience already participates, and respond to the specific question or point rather than dropping in a generic pitch. Add a useful clarification, example, or resource. HubSpot’s guidance is to comment consistently and contribute value rather than focus on self-promotion (HubSpot’s email-list guide).

Keep any reference to your own work secondary. The comment should still help someone who never clicks your link or signs up. Avoid repeating the same pitch in unrelated conversations, and do not promise an answer only to hide it behind an email form.

Make the invitation a natural next step

Once you have contributed something useful, explain what additional, relevant value a reader can get by subscribing. That might be a checklist, template, or recurring email that expands on the topic. Be specific about what the email contains; “join my list” alone gives readers little basis for deciding. Shopify’s guidance emphasizes offering a reason to sign up and making the value clear (Shopify’s guide to building an email list).

For example: “For the thread’s question about planning a weekly newsletter, one useful starting point is to choose a repeatable format and a realistic schedule. I’ve put a planning checklist in my email series, which covers one practical step each week. You can see what it includes and sign up here: [signup page]. No signup is needed to use the suggestion above.” Replace the bracketed phrase with a real link before publishing, and only promise a schedule you can maintain.

Hand off to a deliberate signup

Link to a signup form or landing page that makes the next action unmistakable. The page should state who is sending the email, what subscribers will receive, and how often it arrives if you know the cadence. Keep the form focused: ask only for information you need and can explain. Shopify and HubSpot both recommend a simple signup path and a clear offer (Shopify; HubSpot).

  1. Use a direct invitation. Say that the reader can subscribe, rather than implying a comment or follow automatically signs them up.
  2. Show the offer before the form. Describe the subject and cadence of the emails so the reader can make an informed choice.
  3. Ask for the address only when possible. Add other fields only when they serve a clear purpose the reader can understand.
  4. Consider confirmation signup. A confirmation email gives the person another chance to verify that they intended to subscribe. Its usefulness and legal role depend on your audience and location.

Shopify attributes a reported split of 32% who like double opt-in, 32% who do not mind it, and 8% who actively dislike it to Mailchimp’s 2026 The Art of the Opt-In report (Shopify; Mailchimp’s report page). The report page says the study was conducted with Ascend2, but the full report is gated; the survey question and methodology are not available on that page. Treat those figures as a reported respondent split, not a universal preference or legal requirement.

Keep U.S. commercial email compliant

In the United States, the FTC says the CAN-SPAM Act applies to commercial email, including messages promoting content on commercial websites. The Act does not require prior affirmative consent for every commercial email, but that does not make a comment an appropriate substitute for a deliberate signup. Invite readers to subscribe through the form, and do not infer that they joined from a public contribution. The FTC also warns that bought lists may include addresses that opted out or were gathered unlawfully (FTC CAN-SPAM compliance guide; FTC explanation of consent under CAN-SPAM).

  • Use truthful sender and routing information and non-deceptive subject lines.
  • Identify advertising clearly when required, include a valid physical postal address, and provide a clear way to opt out.
  • Keep the opt-out mechanism available for at least 30 days after sending, and honor opt-out requests within 10 business days.
  • Remember that hiring an email service does not remove the sender’s legal responsibility.

These are U.S. requirements, not a worldwide compliance checklist. Rules depend on where your subscribers are located. Shopify distinguishes U.S. CAN-SPAM from European consent requirements and notes that double opt-in may be necessary for subscribers in Germany (Shopify’s guide). Check the rules that apply to your audience and business rather than assuming the U.S. summary covers them.

Review whether the invitation fits

After participating in a discussion, check the fit on both sides: did the comment address what people were actually discussing, and does the email offer match a need they expressed? If either answer is no, leave out the invitation or improve the offer before using it again. Track the conversations and signup outcomes if useful, but do not assume that comments reliably produce subscribers.

HubSpot describes one creator’s reply to a Google CEO post that attracted nearly 26,000 views and led to hundreds of subscribers (HubSpot). That is an individual case, not a benchmark, causal estimate, or prediction of what another creator should expect. The available guidance does not establish a dependable comment-to-email conversion rate.
