The Google Pixel 7a is a compact 2023 phone with a 90Hz OLED display, Google’s camera features, and wireless charging. Its biggest buying caveat is a documented battery-swelling issue affecting certain units. It can still make sense if you find one in good condition at an appropriate price, but check the individual phone’s battery condition, carrier compatibility, and eligibility for Google’s repair program before buying used or refurbished.
Google Pixel 7a review: the short verdict
The Pixel 7a’s appeal is its combination of a relatively small 6.1-inch screen, an up-to-90Hz refresh rate, and a main camera paired with an ultrawide camera. Google also lists photography tools such as Night Sight, Magic Eraser, and Photo Unblur. The trade-offs are its age, 128 GB of listed storage, and the need to take the battery-swelling program seriously when evaluating a secondhand device.
This is a feature-based assessment, not a hands-on or benchmark review. The available official specifications do not establish how fast the phone performs today, how long its battery lasts in real-world use, or how its camera compares with current alternatives.
What the Pixel 7a offers
Google lists the Pixel 7a as a 2023 model with a 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED display, Tensor G2 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Google’s Pixel 7a specifications give the full hardware details.

Pros: why it may still suit some buyers
Compact screen with a higher refresh-rate option
The 6.1-inch OLED display is smaller than the screens on many phones, which may appeal if you prefer a more manageable device. Google specifies a refresh rate of up to 90Hz; the maximum is a capability, not a guarantee that every app or situation runs at that rate.
Main and ultrawide cameras
The rear setup includes both a 64 MP wide camera and a 13 MP ultrawide camera, giving you two distinct perspectives without relying on a digital crop for every shot. Google lists optical and electronic stabilization. The specifications alone do not establish image quality against other phones.

Google’s photography tools
Google lists Night Sight, Long Exposure, Real Tone, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Super Res Zoom up to 8x among the phone’s camera features. In its May 10, 2023 launch announcement, Google said the main sensor was 72% larger than the Pixel 6a’s and described Night Sight as twice as fast as on that model. Wireless charging
Google included wireless charging in its launch announcement, a useful convenience on a phone in this class. The cited product material does not provide a charging-speed comparison, so it should not be treated as evidence of especially fast charging.

Cons and buying caveats
It is a 2023 model with 128 GB of listed storage
The Pixel 7a is no longer a new-generation model, and Google lists only a 128 GB storage configuration on its specification page. Whether that is enough depends on how many large apps, photos, videos, and offline files you keep on the phone. Consider your storage needs before choosing a used unit.
Battery endurance is not established here
Google lists a typical battery capacity of 4,385 mAh. Its published battery-life estimates are based on pre-production testing and vary with use; they are not independent real-world measurements. Capacity by itself cannot tell you how long a particular used phone will last, especially if its battery has aged.
Certain units may develop battery swelling
Google has an extended repair program because certain Pixel 7a devices may experience unexpected battery swelling. Google identifies possible signs such as the device swelling, a bulging back cover, and faster battery drain. Symptoms may develop over time, and not every affected device will show them. Google says coverage is available for three years after the original retail-purchase date for affected, eligible devices. Eligibility, remedies, and repair availability depend on the device’s status and location; the program is not a promise that every Pixel 7a will receive a replacement or repair. Google lists program residence availability in Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, the United States (including island territories and Puerto Rico), the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and EEA countries. Its listed walk-in battery-replacement locations are the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Japan, Singapore, India, Australia, and France; mail-in repair is listed for the US and India, subject to availability and battery supplies. Other eligible countries may have different options.

What to check before buying a used Pixel 7a
- Ask about the battery and inspect the phone. Check for swelling or a back cover that is lifting or bulging, and ask whether the battery has been serviced. Do not open the phone or try to diagnose a battery problem from photos alone.
- Check the device’s program status with Google. Use Google’s official repair-program page to check the individual device’s eligibility and current options. Do not assume that a seller’s assurance or a general description of the program establishes eligibility.
- Confirm carrier compatibility. Verify that the phone’s exact model and unlock status work with your carrier and the network bands or services you need.
- Assess condition and storage. Check the screen, cameras, ports, buttons, charging, and account-lock status in person where possible. Make sure the listed 128 GB capacity fits your needs.
- Compare the total value with alternatives. Weigh the asking price, condition, seller’s return terms, and remaining practical support against newer devices. Google’s launch materials committed to at least five years of security updates under the launch terms; do not convert that minimum into a specific current support deadline without checking the applicable policy.
Google’s US Store lists a refurbished, unlocked Pixel 7a, describing it as restored with authentic Google Pixel parts, checked through a multi-point quality test, and covered by the same one-year warranty as a new device. If your Pixel 7a may have a swollen battery
Google says a device that is operating normally and has no swelling symptoms does not need to be taken out of use. If your phone shows swelling symptoms or has physical damage, Google recommends stopping use. Contact Google Support for guidance and follow local battery-disposal instructions; do not open the phone or attempt a do-it-yourself battery replacement.
