An idiom can mean almost the opposite of its words: “spill the beans” usually means reveal a secret, not tip over a container. That makes idioms a useful test of translation quality—and a reason to care about where your text is processed. A translator that works offline can keep translation requests off a provider’s server, but only if the relevant operation actually runs on your device. Offline capability alone does not establish that an app never connects to the internet.

Why idioms trip up translators

Many phrases are non-compositional: their intended meaning cannot be reliably worked out by translating each word separately. A literal rendering of “spill the beans,” for example, may be grammatical while failing to communicate the idea of revealing a secret. The challenge is not just vocabulary; it is recognizing the expression and using context to select a suitable meaning in another language.

Research has examined this problem in specific language pairs and built datasets for evaluating idiom translation. In a 2017 study of a Chinese-English test set, Yutong Shao, Rico Sennrich, Bonnie Webber, and Federico Fancellu reported that 46.1% of the idioms in that set were mistranslated under their evaluation. That figure describes the study’s test set and method; it is not a general error rate for every translation system, language pair, or current product. Read the study. A later paper introduced a dataset for idiom translation, reflecting the need to assess these expressions directly rather than assume ordinary sentence-level measures tell the whole story. Why build an offline idiom translator?

The case for an offline idiom translator is twofold: idioms deserve handling that is sensitive to meaning and context, and the text submitted for translation may be personal. A phrase can appear in a private message, work document, medical conversation, or travel note. Keeping translation inference on the device can avoid sending that text to a translation provider’s server.

Those principles explain why such a tool can be worth building; they do not establish how any particular implementation works. The language pairs, model, supported idioms, and evaluation method matter. Without those details, it would be misleading to claim that an app reliably recognizes idioms or outperforms a general translator. A useful evaluation would test expressions in context, include literal and idiomatic uses of the same wording, and check whether the output preserves the speaker’s intended meaning.

What “offline” does—and does not—mean

For translation to be genuinely local, the model or other translation capability must be available on the device, and the translation operation must run there. A feature that sends a request to a cloud service is not offline for that request, even if the app can perform other tasks without a connection.

Service or mode What its policy says about text and processing Practical qualification
Apple Translate Apple says that when both languages have been downloaded, processing takes place on the device. Its disclosure also says audio and text selected for translation may be sent to Apple, requests are associated with a rotating identifier, and transcripts are stored by default for two years. Behavior depends on language downloads and settings. Apple advises against relying on Translate in high-risk situations, navigation, or medical diagnosis or treatment. Apple’s Translation & Privacy disclosure is dated September 14, 2026.
Google Cloud Translation API Google says submitted text is held briefly in memory to provide the service and is not used to train or improve its translation features; it also says content is not shared with third parties. Google says global endpoints cannot be configured for specific processing-region residency. Advanced API regionalized endpoints may be configured for data location. Google Cloud’s data usage FAQ describes these terms.
DeepL Translator and Write DeepL says content submitted through its free Translator or Write is transmitted to the service and processed for a limited period to train and improve services. For Pro Translator, API Pro, and Write Pro, submitted content is temporarily processed to provide the service and deleted after completion. DeepL lists exceptions for Pro users who request saved translations, glossaries, or customization features. The applicable product and settings matter. DeepL’s privacy policy describes its terms.
Browser-based local translation The offline.translator policy describes webpage translation and settings/cache as local, and says webpage text and translations are not sent to developer-controlled servers. The extension relies on Chrome’s built-in APIs, and Chrome may download or update models under platform control. This is the provider’s policy statement, not an independent network audit. Its privacy policy took effect April 24, 2026.

These examples illustrate why the relevant question is not simply whether a product is called offline or cloud-based. Ask what happens to the specific text you enter, whether it is retained or used for service improvement, and whether the feature you are using has a local path.

What to check before trusting an idiom translator

  • Meaning and context: Does it recognize the idiom in a full sentence, distinguish idiomatic from literal use, and produce a natural equivalent?
  • Language coverage: Are the needed languages and language directions supported locally, or does the app switch to a remote service?
  • Network behavior: Does translation still work after setup with the device disconnected? What happens when a local model is missing or a feature cannot run offline?
  • Data handling: Are requests sent to a server, retained, or used to train or improve services? Check the terms for the exact product and tier.
  • Local storage and setup: What must be downloaded, where are translations or settings saved, and can those records be cleared?
  • Risk of error: Treat machine translation as assistance, not the sole basis for medical, legal, safety-critical, or other high-stakes decisions.
