In Bitbucket Cloud, use Source → open the file → … → Open Raw to download one tracked file. For a branch snapshot, download a repository archive; for Git history and ongoing work, clone the repository. Files in the separate Downloads section require a different route, and repository archives do not include actual Git LFS file contents.
Choose what you need to download

The instructions below are for Bitbucket Cloud. Bitbucket Data Center is self-hosted; its version and configuration may use different steps.
Download one tracked file in a browser
- Open the repository and select Source.
- Open the file you want.
- Select the ellipsis menu and choose Open Raw. Atlassian says opening Raw automatically downloads the file. Atlassian’s single-file instructions
- If the browser displays the code or text instead of downloading it, use the browser’s Save As action.
This is the simplest option for an occasional download when you can access the repository in Bitbucket’s web interface.

For a repeatable or scripted download, Bitbucket Cloud’s source endpoint can return an individual file. Replace each placeholder with the matching workspace ID, repository slug, branch name, and file path:

https://api.bitbucket.org/2.0/repositories/<WorkspaceID>/<RepoName>/src/<BranchName>/<FolderName>/<FileName>Omit <FolderName>/ when the file is at the repository root. Atlassian specifies an API token with at least the read:repository:bitbucket scope for this request. See Atlassian’s endpoint and token guidance.
Do not put a live token in a public script or commit it to a repository. Use a protected secret or another secure credential mechanism appropriate to your environment.

Download a branch as a repository archive
An archive is useful when you need a convenient snapshot of files from a branch, not a Git working copy. Atlassian documents this URL pattern; select an archive format supported by the pattern, such as ZIP:
https://bitbucket.org/<workspace-id>/<repository-slug>/get/<branch>.<zip|gz|bz2>You can also use the repository’s Downloads UI to obtain a ZIP. For a scripted ZIP download, the documented cURL form is:

--output repository.zipReplace the workspace, repository, branch, and credentials with your own values. The command saves the response as repository.zip. See Atlassian’s repository archive instructions.
Atlassian documents a known issue in which an archive download can be blocked when the ZIP is under 2 GB but the Git repository itself is over 2 GB. If that applies, cloning is the more suitable way to obtain a local repository.

Get a file from the Downloads section
Bitbucket’s Downloads section contains files manually uploaded there. Those are separate from files tracked under Source, so the single-file Source endpoint is not the right address for them.
The documented REST endpoint pattern is:
https://api.bitbucket.org/2.0/repositories/{workspace}/{repo}/downloads/{filename}Atlassian’s article includes a bearer-token cURL example, but it also contains older username:apppassword wording. Because that legacy example is not confirmed as current authentication guidance, check the current token type and required scopes for your account and endpoint before scripting this request. Clone when you need Git history or continued work
Choose Clone in the repository and copy its HTTPS or SSH command. Atlassian also documents cloning with Sourcetree or VS Code. A clone gives you a local Git repository, with its metadata and support for operations such as pulling and fetching; an archive is only a snapshot. HTTPS users may need Git Credential Manager, while SSH users need a configured SSH key. Atlassian’s cloning guide
Check for Git LFS before relying on an archive
Bitbucket Cloud repository archives do not include actual Git LFS file contents; they contain LFS pointer files instead. Atlassian states: “Currently, Git LFS files are not included when you download an archive of a repository, tag or branch.” Atlassian’s Git LFS limitations
If you need an archive with LFS content, clone the repository and create the archive locally. To include LFS objects referenced across history, fetch all LFS objects before making the archive. An archive downloaded directly from Bitbucket is therefore not a complete backup of a repository that uses LFS.

Atlassian’s Bitbucket Cloud API limits documentation, accessed in 2026, lists the following authenticated request limits. These are request allowances, not download-speed guarantees; check the live documentation before planning a bulk job because limits can change.
