A Universal Product Code (UPC) is a product-identification system used with retail barcodes. More precisely, the product number is a 12-digit Global Trade Item Number (GTIN-12), and UPC-A is the barcode symbol that carries it so a scanner can read it. People often use “UPC” to mean the number, the printed barcode, or both.
What does UPC stand for?
UPC stands for Universal Product Code. In everyday retail use, it commonly refers to the identifying number printed beneath a product’s barcode or to the barcode itself. GS1 US explains the term and its common usage in its barcode FAQs.
Is a UPC the same as a barcode?
Not exactly. The GTIN is the data that identifies a trade item, such as a product offered for sale. A barcode is a machine-readable data carrier. In the familiar UPC-A format, the symbol encodes a GTIN-12; a scanner reads the bars, and retail or inventory systems use the number to identify the item. GS1 US explains this distinction in its GTIN overview.
How many digits are in a UPC?
A UPC-A represents a GTIN-12, which has 12 digits. The first 11 digits comprise the GS1 company-prefix and item-reference portions; the twelfth is a check digit calculated from the preceding digits. The portions follow GS1 allocation rules, so an arbitrary 12-digit number is not necessarily a valid UPC. GS1 US describes the structure in its GTIN overview and GTIN assignment guidance.

What is the difference between UPC-A and UPC-E?

UPC-E is not a separate eight-digit product identifier: it compactly encodes eligible GTIN-12 values according to defined zero patterns. GS1’s General Specifications, Release 25.0, ratified January 2025, details the encoding rules.
Are UPCs used only in North America?
No. GTINs are intended for global use. GTIN-12, commonly associated with UPC, is used predominantly in North America; GTIN-13, commonly associated with EAN-13 barcodes, is used predominantly outside North America. These are regional patterns, not exclusive boundaries. GS1 US summarizes the distinction in its comparison of EAN numbers and UPCs.
