If keeping your writing on your Mac is the priority, TextWarden is the clearest documented fit among these options: its project says the core English grammar checker runs locally and optional Apple Intelligence features run on-device. Those are first-party claims, not independently audited findings. TextWarden also needs Accessibility permission to check and correct text in other apps, and its documentation warns that support varies by app.
What “local-first” means for a Mac writing assistant
A Mac app, a list of supported apps, or a switch for choosing where the assistant appears does not establish that your writing stays on your computer. For a privacy-focused choice, look for an explicit explanation of where text is processed. Of the options covered here, TextWarden’s project documentation specifically says its grammar checks run locally and that optional Apple Intelligence features process on-device. The other reviewed product pages do not establish local-only processing.
TextWarden’s local workflow and requirements
TextWarden describes itself as a free, open-source macOS grammar checker. Its bundled Harper engine checks English spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style locally. Optional rewrite and compose features use Apple Intelligence on the Mac, according to the project. The project also says it has no account or subscription and does not upload writing or prompts; those are the project’s own privacy statements, not an independent audit. | Capability | Requirements documented by TextWarden |
|---|---|
| Core grammar checker | macOS 14 Sonoma or later; Intel or Apple Silicon Mac |
| Apple Intelligence features | macOS 26 or later, a supported Apple M-series Mac, and Apple Intelligence enabled |
The core checker and optional AI features are separate capabilities: a Mac that meets the base requirements does not necessarily meet the additional Apple Intelligence requirements.

What to check before relying on it across apps
For text fields in other applications, TextWarden requests Accessibility permission so it can read and update text. The project cautions that behavior differs between apps; it documents incomplete behavior in some editors and says Google Docs and complex web editors are unsupported by its browser-extension preview. Check the apps you rely on most before making it your system-wide writing assistant. TextWarden’s compatibility and permission documentation
Local processing also does not mean that no writing-related data can exist on the device. TextWarden says update checks retrieve release information from GitHub without uploading writing or prompts. It also notes that local logs can contain portions of writing, especially with verbose logging, and recommends reviewing diagnostic files before sharing them. The project states, “Nothing you type is sent anywhere”; treat that as the project’s claim rather than an independently verified guarantee.

How the other Mac options differ
| Option | What its reviewed source describes | What it establishes about local processing |
|---|---|---|
| Harper | An open-source English grammar checker; TextWarden bundles it for its core checks | The Harper project describes it as offline, but its reviewed page does not establish a complete system-wide Mac consumer app. Harper project |
| LanguageTool for macOS | Checking in Mail, Word, Slack, Teams, Messages, Notes, and other apps through a shortcut; users can choose which apps it checks | Its reviewed Mac page does not confirm that processing stays on-device. App selection is not proof of local processing. LanguageTool for Mac |
| ProWritingAid Everywhere | Mac desktop integration with popular writing apps and 25+ advertised advanced reports | Its reviewed desktop page does not establish local-only processing; its emphasis is editing depth. The report count is the vendor’s feature claim, not a comparative test. ProWritingAid Everywhere |
| Grammarly for Mac | A desktop and browser writing assistant that works across apps and can be turned off in selected apps | Its reviewed Mac page does not establish that text remains on-device. Grammarly for Mac |
Harper’s project calls it an “Offline, privacy-first grammar checker.” That describes the engine, not by itself a full Mac-wide workflow. Harper project

Choose based on your main constraint
- You need documented local grammar checks: TextWarden is the strongest fit among these reviewed choices, subject to its app compatibility limits and project-stated privacy claims.
- You need editing reports or broad app integrations: ProWritingAid and LanguageTool describe those workflows, but the cited pages do not substantiate local-only processing. Decide whether that unresolved point is acceptable before entering sensitive text.
- You want an offline grammar engine to investigate: Harper is documented as offline, but the reviewed project page does not establish a complete system-wide Mac app experience.
