A full-array LED TV is an LCD television with LEDs arranged behind the screen to illuminate it. In a full-array local-dimming model, the television can control groups of those LEDs separately, dimming darker parts of the picture while keeping brighter areas lit. The LCD pixels shape that light to form the image; they are not LEDs themselves.

What “full-array” means

“Full-array” describes where the backlight sits: LEDs are distributed across the rear of the display rather than placed only along an edge. The LCD panel modulates that backlight, and color filters produce red, green, and blue image components. By contrast, OLED pixels emit their own light and do not need a separate backlight.

Full-array placement and local dimming are related, but they are not identical terms. A rear array can be divided into zones that the TV controls independently; that arrangement is called full-array local dimming. Sharp TV USA describes it this way: Full-array local dimming divides a rear LED array into controllable zones. The number and behavior of those zones depend on the particular TV.

How it differs from other backlight types

Type Where the light comes from What the label tells you
Edge-lit LEDs sit along one or more screen edges; a light guide spreads illumination across the panel. The backlight begins at the edges, not across the rear.
Direct-lit LEDs sit behind the screen. The rear placement alone does not establish that the TV has local dimming.
Full-array LEDs are arranged across the rear of the screen. It describes a rear-array layout; check the model’s specifications to see whether it also has local dimming.
Full-array local dimming A rear LED array is divided into separately controlled zones. The TV can adjust backlight illumination in different parts of the image, but the label does not reveal zone count or performance.
OLED Each pixel produces its own light. There is no separate LED backlight.

Manufacturers may draw distinctions differently in their explanations. LG describes full-array as a rear layout with more LEDs and zones than the direct-lit option in its comparison, while Sharp cautions that the marketing term alone does not determine image quality. Treat layout and dimming capability as separate details to verify for the exact model.

What local dimming can change—and its trade-off

Because a dimming zone usually covers many pixels, the TV cannot adjust the backlight independently for every point on the screen. Zone dimming can improve perceived contrast by reducing illumination in dark areas while leaving a bright area lit. But light may spill beyond a bright object into a dark background, creating a halo or glow known as blooming. Subtitles on a dark scene and stars against a black sky can make this artifact easier to notice.

How visible blooming is depends on the TV’s implementation and settings. The term “full-array local dimming” does not promise that blooming will be absent, nor does it tell you how uniform the screen will look.

How Mini LED fits in

Mini LED is a backlight description, not another name for full-array. Sony describes its Mini LED backlights as using LEDs that are smaller and denser than those in conventional Full Array LED sets; both types can control areas of the backlight. Whether a specific Mini LED television uses full-array local dimming, and how it performs, should be confirmed in that model’s specifications rather than inferred from the label alone.

What to check on a specific TV

  • Backlight layout: Confirm whether the exact model is edge-lit, direct-lit, or described as full-array.
  • Local dimming: Look for an explicit statement that local dimming is present and operates in separate zones. “Full-array” by itself does not establish this.
  • Model-level details: If the manufacturer publishes a zone count or describes dimming behavior and screen uniformity, assess those details for that model. A comparable set of model measurements is not established by the sources cited here.
  • Visible blooming: Check whether bright objects against dark scenes produce distracting halos, and consider that settings can affect what you see.
  • Mini LED wording: Verify how the manufacturer uses the term for the particular model; LED size and density are distinct from the full-array layout label.

These labels describe parts of the display system, not a complete performance rating. A full-array set is not automatically better than every edge-lit or direct-lit TV; implementation and model-specific evidence matter.
