Within is a small journaling progressive web app (PWA) built by Sara Aniceto for a group of friends. It pairs a distraction-light writing page and browser-saved history with optional reflection questions and mood prompts generated by a Gemma model running through Ollama on the same computer. Aniceto says journal text is sent to local Ollama rather than a cloud AI service; this is a description of the design, not an independent privacy audit. Aniceto’s project article describes the app and its implementation.
What Within does
Within is designed around writing first, with AI as an optional aid. Its main features, as described by creator Sara Aniceto, are:
- A distraction-light page for writing journal entries.
- A history view that saves entries in the browser without requiring an account.
- Reflection questions generated from an entry.
- Short prompts for anxious, grateful, reflective, or bored moods.
After a successful save, the writing field clears. Choosing “Write about this” replaces the current text with the selected prompt. Aniceto says the app can still be used to write and save when AI is unavailable.
She puts the boundary plainly: “This is a writing aid, not therapy or professional support.”

Where the AI runs—and what “private” means here
In the described current implementation, the browser sends AI requests to Ollama on the same computer at http://localhost:11434/api/generate. The model is installed locally; Aniceto’s setup example uses Gemma through Ollama. The static app interface is hosted on Render, but Aniceto says the journal text is not sent to Render through the AI request. The described request path is local rather than a cloud AI service.
That distinction is meaningful, but it is not an audited privacy guarantee. The project account does not independently verify all network traffic, browser extensions, operating-system processes, or hosting behavior. The creator also says entries are not uploaded for model training and that the model is not trained on them; those are her claims about the project, not the result of an independent assessment.

- User-Friendly Layout: Clear fields and compact size ensure quick, organized access to login details, great for gifting to tech users, seniors, or anyone needing a simple, secure password management solution.
Journal history is stored in browser localStorage, tied to that browser and the site origin. It is not account-synced, and it should not be treated as a backup. The project description does not establish encryption, recovery, or protection from someone who can access the browser.

How the current architecture differs from the earlier version
Within’s AI design changed. Aniceto first used MediaPipe and WebGPU for inference inside the browser. She says that approach involved large model downloads and depended on browser GPU support. The current described design moves inference to Ollama running on the same computer as the browser.

| Aspect | Earlier approach | Current described approach |
|---|---|---|
| Where inference runs | In the browser using MediaPipe and WebGPU | Through Ollama on the same computer |
| Model setup | Large model downloads through the browser | Install Ollama and download a model locally |
| Browser GPU dependency | Depends on browser WebGPU support | Uses Ollama rather than browser-based WebGPU inference |
| Setup burden | Browser-side model download and GPU support | Ollama, a local model, and permission for the site origin |
| Phone access to inference | The project description does not establish this for the earlier approach | A phone’s localhost points to the phone, not the computer running Ollama |
This is an architecture comparison, not a performance comparison. The project account provides no benchmark, hardware compatibility list, memory requirement, or model-quality evaluation.
What the app needs before offline use
Offline use does not mean setup can happen without an internet connection. The app shell must first be cached, and the model must first be downloaded. Aniceto says the app can then support offline use while Ollama remains running. In her words: “After the app shell is cached and the model is installed, the design supports offline use while local Ollama remains running. Saved entries belong to that browser and site origin; browser storage is not a backup.”

- If the browser requests local network access, allow it for the app.
- Reconnect to the app and select an installed model.
Aniceto also gives a macOS/Linux approach for starting Ollama with OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1, after stopping any existing Ollama server. Because Ollama’s setup requirements can change, check its current documentation before relying on these commands as general instructions. The project article does not establish hardware requirements or guarantee that a particular computer can run the example model.

Can you use the app on a phone?
The PWA can open on mobile for writing and viewing history, according to Aniceto. The current AI integration, however, expects Ollama to run on the same computer as the browser. A phone cannot use the laptop’s Ollama endpoint by requesting localhost, because on the phone that address refers to the phone itself. Aniceto summarizes it this way: “The site also opens on mobile for writing and history. The current AI integration is for the same computer: localhost on a phone refers to that phone, not a laptop.”
What the project account says about testing and setup problems
Aniceto reports four automated tests covering local model discovery and selection, non-streaming requests, failure handling, and service-worker cache cleanup, along with manual verification of the local connection. These reports do not amount to an independent security or privacy test.
She also describes two setup issues:
- HTTP 403 when connecting: In her account, Ollama had not been restarted after its allowed-origin configuration was changed. Restarting it with the explicit origin resolved the issue.
- An old “Downloading model” message after an update: Aniceto says a stale client was still showing an earlier interface. The reported fix was to version asset URLs and use a new service-worker cache.
The app’s connection message is: “Cannot reach Ollama at localhost:11434. Start Ollama on this computer, allow this site in OLLAMA_ORIGINS, and allow local network access in your browser.” If that appears, first confirm that Ollama is running on the same computer, then check the allowed origin and any browser permission prompt.

Licensing and the limits of the available account
Aniceto says the application code is MIT-licensed, while Gemma models have their own usage terms. Her article does not detail those model terms, so anyone redistributing or using a model should read the applicable license text directly. The project description is a first-person account, not independent confirmation of current demo behavior, data handling, storage durability, compatibility, or Ollama setup requirements.
