Crypto double spending is an attempt to use the same digital funds in two conflicting payments. In Bitcoin, each transaction output can be spent only once in the blockchain the network accepts; a conflicting payment is settled only if it becomes part of that accepted transaction history. A payment merely broadcast to the network has not yet been confirmed.
What is double spending?
Double spending means attempting to spend the same digital funds more than once. In Bitcoin, a transaction uses one or more outputs created by earlier transactions. Each output is spendable once in the accepted blockchain. Two transactions that try to use the same output are conflicting spends: they cannot both be valid in that history.
This is the digital equivalent of trying to pay two different recipients with the same money. Bitcoin’s glossary describes the attack as a malicious user trying to spend bitcoins to two recipients at the same time: Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin vocabulary.
What does crypto double spending mean for a payment?
A payment’s broadcast is not the same as its settlement. Before a transaction is included in a block, it has zero confirmations. A recipient may see it in the network, but that alone does not show that it will remain in the accepted blockchain. Bitcoin’s developer guide cautions that unconfirmed payments should generally not be trusted without considering the risk: Bitcoin Developer Guide: Payment Processing.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
When a transaction is included in a block, it has one confirmation. Each block added after that increases its confirmation count and makes replacing the transaction more difficult. Risk does not instantly become zero: Bitcoin documentation notes that a recent block can be replaced.
How does Bitcoin resolve conflicting payments?
Bitcoin uses a peer-to-peer network to record transactions in a shared history secured by proof of work. As Satoshi Nakamoto put it in the 2008 whitepaper, “We propose a solution to the double-spending problem using a peer-to-peer network.” Rather than asking a central mint to approve each payment, participants rely on the network’s consensus process and accepted chain to establish transaction order. See the Bitcoin whitepaper and the Bitcoin Developer Guide’s block-chain explanation.

If two transactions spend the same output, the first one a particular node sees is not guaranteed to win. The network’s accepted chain determines which transaction is recorded; the conflicting spend cannot also use that output in the same accepted history.

How many confirmations are enough?
There is no single confirmation threshold that fits every payment. The recipient’s decision depends on the payment’s value, how long they can wait, and how much reversal risk they are willing to accept. A zero-confirmation transaction has not been included in a block; one confirmation means inclusion in a block; deeper confirmation means more blocks have since been added.

Bitcoin.org says blocks are appended roughly every 10 minutes on average and notes that higher-value payments may warrant six or more confirmations. The developer guide describes six confirmations as an approximate rule of thumb and says one confirmation averages 10 minutes when a transaction pays sufficient fees. These are Bitcoin-specific estimates and guidance, not guaranteed processing times or a universal requirement. Consult the Bitcoin glossary and payment-processing guide for the context.

The explanation here is specific to Bitcoin’s transaction model and confirmation guidance. Other cryptocurrencies may use different transaction rules and consensus processes, so Bitcoin’s confirmation advice should not be treated as universal crypto guidance.
