A phone operating system (OS) is the core software that runs a phone: it provides the interface, coordinates basic functions, and gives apps a platform to work with the device’s hardware.
What does a phone operating system do?
The OS sits between the phone’s physical components and the apps you use. It manages system functions and provides services apps can use, such as access to the camera, microphone, or location features. The phone maker’s hardware and software implementation also affect how those features behave.
The OS shapes the interface you navigate and helps determine which apps and services are available. It also establishes rules for how apps interact with the device. For example, Android runs apps in separate security sandboxes by default, helping limit what one app can access or affect in another app’s environment. How are the OS, hardware, and apps different?
- Hardware means the physical parts, such as the screen, camera, microphone, and processor.
- The operating system is the system software that manages the phone and provides an environment for apps.
- Apps are programs that run on the OS and use its services according to its rules.
For instance, the camera lens and sensor are hardware; the OS coordinates access to them; and a camera app provides controls for taking and organizing photos. An app is not the operating system, even when it is built into the phone.

What are examples of phone operating systems?
Android and Apple’s iOS are familiar operating systems for smartphones. Some feature phones use other systems, including KaiOS, so the term “phone OS” does not refer to one universal system. A 2021 U.S. House Judiciary Committee report described Android and iOS together as running on more than 99% of smartphones worldwide. That is a historical figure cited in the report, not a current market-share measurement.
Android is not the same as Google
Android is an operating system and an open-source project that device makers can customize. Google’s apps and services are separate from Android itself: Android compatibility does not by itself mean a device has a license for Google Play or Google Mobile Services. Why does the operating system matter?
The OS is one important part of how a phone works, but it does not determine everything on its own. When considering two phones or platforms, look at the interface, app and service availability, compatible hardware, security and update arrangements, and integration with other devices and services. Manufacturer choices and the phone’s hardware also influence the experience. The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s mobile ecosystems report discusses how operating systems shape these choices.
