NFC tags are read when a compatible device is brought close to them; QR codes are read visually by a camera or scanner. Choose NFC for a deliberate tap or a discreet, embedded interaction, and QR for a visible code people can point a camera at. Neither is automatically better or more secure: device support, placement, accessibility, and the destination all matter.

What is an NFC tag?

An NFC tag is a small contactless device that communicates with a nearby compatible reader over short-range radio. NFC operates at 13.56 MHz. A common use is storing an NDEF record—a standard data format that can contain a web link, text, contact information, or another record that a phone or app can interpret. The NFC Forum describes tags as contactless memory cards and defines five tag types with differing protocols and data structures. NFC Forum: NFC technology and NFC Forum: specifications.

In practice, the user brings a phone or other compatible device close to the tag. The device may then open a link or offer another action, depending on the tag, its data, the operating system, and the app handling it.

What is a QR code?

A QR code is a visual symbol that encodes data for a QR-capable camera or scanner to read. It can be printed or displayed on a screen, so a person can point a camera at it rather than touching a specific spot. The symbol must be visible to the reader; lighting and line of sight can affect scanning. The NFC Forum’s comparison flyer describes these considerations for static QR codes, but it is an NFC-industry source rather than an independent study: NFC Forum: NFC vs. QR Codes.

How NFC tags and QR codes differ

Factor NFC tag QR code
How it is read A compatible device reads the tag through short-range radio when brought close. A camera or scanner optically reads a visible symbol.
Typical interaction The person taps or holds a device near the tag. The person points a camera at the code.
Placement Can be placed in a sticker, product, or other form factor, including a less visible location. Must be positioned where a camera or scanner can see it.
What it carries Often an NDEF record such as a URL, text, or contact information; the device’s response depends on platform and app support. Encodes a payload that a QR-capable reader interprets.
Practical conditions Requires close proximity and compatible tag and device support. Requires visibility; lighting and line of sight affect scanning.

How close does a phone need to be to an NFC tag?

There is no single guaranteed distance for every phone and tag. The NFC Forum’s technology overview gives a typical range of up to 2 cm and says the Certified Compliant range is 5 mm. Android’s developer overview describes NFC connections as typically requiring 4 cm or less. These are different descriptions from different sources, not a promise that a particular installation will work at either distance. Alignment, tag type, device, and surroundings can affect the result. Android Developers: Near-field communication.

In 2025, the NFC Forum said Release 15 increased the standard’s operating range fourfold, from 0.5 cm to 2 cm, to improve connection initiation and alignment. That is the Forum’s description of a standards capability and its intended benefit—not a guarantee for every tag or installed device. NFC Forum: Release 15 announcement.

Will every phone read every NFC tag?

No. The outcome can depend on the NFC tag type, its NDEF record, the device, the operating system, and the app that handles the data. Android supports NFC reader/writer and card-emulation modes; some apps use NDEF, while data the Android framework does not understand may require an app to process raw bytes. Apple’s Core NFC documentation describes reading NDEF data on supported NFC tag types 1 through 5. Those platform capabilities do not mean every phone handles every tag or record in the same way. Check the target phones and the intended record before relying on a tap-based experience. Apple: Core NFC.

Which should you use: NFC or a QR code?

Choose NFC when a deliberate tap is useful

  • You want a close-range interaction that feels intentional.
  • The tag should be small, integrated into a product, or less visually prominent than a printed code.
  • You have checked that the tag type and stored record work with the devices your audience uses.
  • You may need to change a tag’s destination later; whether that is possible depends on the tag and how it has been configured.

Choose a QR code when visible camera access fits better

  • You can display or print a code where people can see and scan it.
  • You want people to access the same destination without finding a particular tap point.
  • Your audience is more likely to recognize camera scanning than NFC tapping.
  • You can keep the code legible and account for visibility and lighting.

Offer both when the setting calls for choice

In a public-facing location, a visible QR code alongside an NFC tag can give visitors two ways to reach the same experience. This is a practical design option, not a guarantee that either method will work on every device. Make both interaction points clear and test them with the phones and conditions expected at the site.

Are NFC tags more secure than QR codes?

Proximity is not proof of trust. A nearby NFC tag can still contain data that leads to an unwanted destination, and a QR code’s appearance does not prove where it will take the scanner. Static QR codes can be copied or covered with a replacement, as the NFC Forum’s 2021 comparison flyer notes; that flyer should not be treated as independent security testing.

The NFC Forum specifications include signed NDEF as one way to verify data authenticity and integrity. That is a possible control, not a property of every NFC tag. For sensitive or consequential uses, validate the destination and apply authentication and integrity protections appropriate to the application. NFC Forum: specifications.
