Wi-Fi connects a device to a nearby wireless local network; 4G connects it to a mobile operator’s cellular network. They are different kinds of wireless access, not competing versions of the same technology—and a device may use both, switching between them or steering traffic across them when its setup supports it.
What Wi-Fi and 4G mean
Wi-Fi is a local wireless network
Wi-Fi is based on the IEEE 802.11 family of standards, which specifies wireless local-area network (WLAN) communication. A phone or computer uses Wi-Fi to connect to a nearby access point, commonly one provided by a router. The router links devices on that local network to an internet connection, if one is available. A Wi-Fi router by itself does not provide cellular 4G service. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) identifies IEEE 802.11-2024 as the wireless LAN specification in its IEEE 802.11 reference.
4G is a cellular-generation label
4G refers broadly to mobile broadband delivered over a cellular network. A device connects through a mobile operator’s network rather than to a nearby local Wi-Fi access point. The label is not a precise name for one single technology: the ITU notes that “4G” remains undefined in everyday use, even as operators have applied it to evolved mobile technologies. Its IMT-Advanced explainer distinguishes that loose usage from the formal standards designation.

Why “4G” can mean different things
In its February 2022 article, “An inside look at mobile broadband standards development”, the ITU wrote: “While the term ‘4G’ remains undefined, it is being applied by some operators to the forerunners of IMT-Advanced technologies, such as LTE (Long-Term Evolution) telecommunication, HSPA+ (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access), and WiMAX wireless broadband, along with other evolved 3G technologies, which provide a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial 3G systems.”

User-friendly menus and on-screen help prompts make it easier than ever to get connected. Charge compatible devices or share files across your Mifi 8800L’s network using a multi-functional USB port.
- Share more. The MiFi 8800L lets you connect with up to 15 trusted devices at a time. You can even share files over your local Wi-Fi connection by using a storage device with a USB-C connector.
- Go unplugged. Stay productive throughout your entire day with a long-last 4400 mAh battery. The MiFi 8800L can go unplugged for up to 24 hours x and fuels up faster thanks to built-in QuickCharge technology
The formal standards language is narrower. The current ITU Recommendation ITU-R M.2012-7, dated February 2026, identifies LTE-Advanced as an IMT-Advanced terrestrial radio interface. In practical terms, a phone’s “4G” indicator communicates that it is using a mobile-network connection described by the operator as 4G; it does not, by itself, identify a single universal standard or guarantee a particular speed.
Wi-Fi and 4G compared
| Aspect | Wi-Fi | 4G |
|---|---|---|
| Network type | Wireless local area network based on IEEE 802.11 | Mobile broadband through a cellular network |
| Typical connection point | A nearby access point, often supplied by a router | A compatible device connecting to a mobile operator’s network |
| What you need | Access to a local Wi-Fi network and its internet connection, if internet access is needed | Compatible cellular equipment and access to a mobile network; service terms depend on the operator |
| Mobility | Usually tied to the range and availability of the local access point | Designed for mobile network access where the operator provides service |
These categories describe how a device reaches a network; they do not establish which connection will be faster or cheaper for you. Performance depends on local conditions, including cellular coverage and congestion, Wi-Fi access-point quality, device capability, and the service involved. A fair speed comparison would need measurements in the same places and conditions; no universal winner follows from the technology labels alone.

Can you use Wi-Fi and 4G together?
Yes, they are not mutually exclusive. A phone can use Wi-Fi while cellular service is available, and a 4G LTE mobile hotspot can use the cellular network for its internet connection while sharing that connection with nearby devices over Wi-Fi. The ITU’s Recommendation ITU-R M.2012-7 describes LTE/Wi-Fi interworking, including traffic steering toward an appropriate radio access. Whether a particular device or network switches or steers traffic in a particular way depends on its configuration and network support.

Which connection should you use?
- Choose Wi-Fi when you have access to a suitable local network, such as one provided by a home or workplace router.
- Use 4G when you need mobile-network access and the cellular network is available to your device under your service arrangement.
- Consider a 4G LTE mobile hotspot if you need to share cellular internet access with nearby Wi-Fi devices. The hotspot uses cellular service for its upstream connection; the nearby devices connect to it over Wi-Fi.
- Check the actual conditions before deciding based on speed or cost. Coverage, congestion, access-point quality, device support, and service terms vary; the standards alone do not establish local performance, availability, or price.
