In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (MWIII), the most useful way to improve with a weapon is to choose a loadout for a role, test its components in the Firing Range, then take it into the mode and map you intend to play. Use what you learn from handling and match situations to revise the setup. Weapon stats can help you compare tradeoffs, but they cannot tell you exactly how a weapon will feel.
Start with a loadout that suits your role
A loadout is a system, not just a primary weapon. MWIII loadouts combine a primary and secondary weapon with lethal and tactical equipment, a Field Upgrade, vest, gloves, boots, and gear. Choose pieces that support one another and the way you expect to play; a setup for a particular mode or map may call for different choices than one built around your general playstyle. Activision’s MWIII weapons and loadouts guide recommends tailoring the setup to the mode, map, and playstyle, then playing to its strengths.

Choosing a first weapon
If you are unsure where to begin, Activision suggests an Assault Rifle (AR). The guide describes ARs as generally suited to medium range while remaining versatile at shorter and longer ranges. Treat this as a starting recommendation, not a guarantee that every AR or configuration will fit every player or situation.

Think about the role you want the weapon to fill before adding attachments. Read their descriptions and consider what you are trading away as well as what you gain. Activision’s November 2023 Gunsmith overview says most weapons can use up to five attachments; that is a limit, not a reason to fill every slot. The same overview lists nine Gunsmith statistics: damage, fire rate, range, accuracy, recoil control, mobility, handling, rounds, and reserve. Its description of Weapon Tuning being removed reflects the state described in November 2023, so check the current in-game Gunsmith if that mechanic matters to your setup. Compare tradeoffs, then try the weapon
Begin with the engagement range and role you need, then compare the relevant stat categories: damage, fire rate, range, accuracy, recoil control, mobility, and handling. These categories describe different aspects of a weapon; no single displayed number establishes that a weapon is the right choice for you.
Activision cautions that its numerical charts give only a general idea of effectiveness: players may not know how a weapon shoots until they play with it. Use the stats to narrow your choices, then assess the actual firing and handling in practice. A build that looks attractive on a chart may not feel comfortable in your hands.

Use the Firing Range before a match
When a weapon or attachment setup is unfamiliar, use the Firing Range to inspect how its components behave before committing to it in a match. Activision’s loadout guide treats the range as a practice step for understanding a setup, while noting that trying the weapon in play is still important.

- Choose a role and loadout. Decide what range and situation you are preparing for, then select the weapon and supporting equipment.
- Inspect the build. In Gunsmith, read attachment descriptions and consider their effects alongside the weapon’s displayed stats.
- Test the weapon in the Firing Range. Practice firing and handling with the selected setup. Notice whether the weapon feels manageable for the role you chose.
- Take it into the intended mode and map. Pay attention to how the setup performs in the situations you actually encounter, rather than judging it only in practice.
- Revise one part at a time. If the weapon does not suit the role, adjust the build or choose a different setup, then test the revised version.
Activision’s MWIII training guide recommends becoming comfortable with the three basic methods of firing before adding advanced tactics. That progression keeps practice focused: establish control with ordinary firing first, then layer on more demanding techniques when the basics feel comfortable.

Choose firing tactics for the situation
Tac-Stance for close-range aggression
Tac-Stance is a situational option for close quarters, not a universal replacement for aiming down sights (ADS). Activision describes it as less precise than full ADS but more mobile and easier to handle, with aggressive close-range use as its intended purpose. Consider it when mobility and handling matter more than the precision of full ADS, and use ordinary ADS when the situation calls for greater precision. The tradeoff is described in Activision’s August 2023 Tac-Stance announcement.

Weapon practice is only one part of improving in multiplayer. Activision recommends learning match flow, pursuing objectives, and trying different modes so you develop across different situations. For example, Domination centers on capturing, holding, and defending objectives; Hardpoint centers on capturing and holding the Hardpoint. Those objectives affect where engagements happen and what your loadout needs to help you do. The MWIII multiplayer guide describes these mode goals.

Use each match to test whether the setup supports your objective and approach. If you are repeatedly caught outside the range your weapon suits, or its handling makes it difficult to act in the situations your mode demands, revisit the loadout and practice it again. The goal is to build familiarity with the weapon and the match situations in which you use it.
