Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 is a tracker for people using Samsung’s Galaxy and SmartThings ecosystem—not a general-purpose Android tracker. It can help locate an item over Bluetooth, use nearby participating Galaxy devices when the tag is out of range, and provide directional guidance at close range with a compatible UWB-enabled Galaxy phone. You need a Samsung account and SmartThings Find registration; the exact device and software requirements depend on which feature you want to use.
Does SmartTag2 work with your phone?
Samsung describes two different compatibility levels: basic Galaxy compatibility and the additional requirements for UWB-based nearby guidance. Its UK product specifications list compatible Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 9 or later, and require a UWB-enabled Galaxy device for UWB features. Samsung’s US launch announcement gives more specific requirements for SmartThings Find and full functionality: a Galaxy phone or tablet running Android 11 or later, at least 3 GB of free RAM, a logged-in Samsung account, and opt-in to SmartThings Find. It also says pairing with a UWB-enabled Galaxy smartphone running Android 11 or later is required for full functionality. These statements concern different aspects of compatibility, rather than establishing that every Android 9 Galaxy device supports every feature.
Before buying or setting up a tag, check Samsung’s current support information for your country and your specific device. UWB capability is a separate requirement from basic Galaxy compatibility, and software or feature availability may vary by device, OS version, or country. Samsung’s UWB device examples in its 2023 launch announcement are historical, not a complete current list.

How do you set up SmartTag2?
Registration in SmartThings Find is required. You also need to be signed in to a Samsung account, and SmartThings Find must be available and enabled on a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet. Samsung’s launch announcement specifies Android 11 or later and at least 3 GB of free RAM for the Find service. Because Samsung’s published compatibility descriptions vary by feature and source, confirm the current requirements for your device in Samsung support information for your region before relying on a particular feature.
- Sign in to your Samsung account on a compatible Galaxy device.
- Enable or opt in to SmartThings Find, meeting the service requirements that apply to your device.
- Register the SmartTag2 in SmartThings Find, then use the app to locate it or configure supported features.
- If you want UWB directional guidance, confirm that your Galaxy phone supports UWB and meets Samsung’s applicable software requirements.
Samsung’s product page also describes SmartTag2 as able to control registered SmartThings IoT devices when the tag is connected to the owner’s mobile device. This is an optional SmartThings use, not a requirement for item finding.
How far away can you find a SmartTag2?
SmartTag2 uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ultra-wideband (UWB). Samsung lists a BLE range of up to 120 m; its launch announcement qualifies that figure as unobstructed. It is a maximum specification, not a promise of reliable coverage through walls, inside a vehicle, or in every environment.

When the tag is within Bluetooth range, SmartThings Find can help locate it. If it is outside that range, the tag does not independently report its position by GPS or satellite. Instead, Samsung’s Find Network can help relay its location when opted-in Galaxy devices are near it. Whether that works depends on participating devices being nearby, so updates are not guaranteed everywhere or continuously.
At close range, the app’s Search Nearby feature can use UWB on compatible phones to show directional guidance in Compass View, including arrows and distance. A drawer, wall, car, or other obstacle can reduce accuracy, and Samsung says availability varies by OS version, device, and country. Ring Your Tag is another nearby finding option.

What is the difference between Normal Mode and Power Saving Mode?
Samsung gives battery-life estimates for two modes. The figures below are Samsung internal-test estimates from its 2023 launch announcement, using a pre-release tag and the included CR2032 battery; they are not independent field averages. Actual life varies with usage, the connected device, and battery maker.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Mode | Samsung’s estimate | Function trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Normal Mode | Up to 500 days | Normal feature availability; actual use affects battery life. |
| Power Saving Mode | Up to 700 days | Some functions are disabled, including Search Nearby and IoT control; basic Bluetooth finding remains. |
SmartTag2 uses a replaceable CR2032 battery. The longer Power Saving Mode estimate comes with reduced functionality, so choose it only if the features it disables are not important to how you use the tag.

Can SmartTag2 get wet?
Samsung rates SmartTag2 IP67. The cited test was submersion in up to 1 m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. That is a defined laboratory condition, not a general waterproof guarantee: Samsung advises against beach, pool, or soapy water and notes that water resistance may diminish over time. Avoid treating the rating as protection against every kind of water exposure.

What happens when you turn on Lost Mode?
Lost Mode lets you register contact details and a message that can be displayed when someone scans the tag’s NFC feature. The finder needs an NFC-capable device and an internet connection for the registered information to appear. It can make it easier for a person who finds the item to contact you, but it depends on them scanning the tag.

Samsung says SmartThings Find encrypts user data and is safeguarded by Samsung Knox. Samsung’s product-team interview also describes Unknown tag alerts for unregistered Galaxy SmartTags; the feature must be enabled to receive notifications. These are specific protections and alert features, not a guarantee that all unwanted tracking will be detected or prevented.

Are accessories necessary?
No. Samsung lists silicone and rugged SmartTag2 cases with attachment rings, sold separately. They can provide ways to attach the tag to an item, but are optional; verify that an accessory is specifically compatible with SmartTag2. The tag’s replaceable CR2032 is another directly relevant consideration when planning for battery replacement.
