Giving an AI assistant persistent memory can make it more convenient, but it also changes the context behind future answers. A remembered detail—or an inference you never meant to become a standing profile—can steer an unrelated conversation. The available evidence explains how that can happen; it does not verify the specific incident in the headline. If this happened to you, the key questions are what the assistant retained, when the behavior changed, and whether removing that information changes later responses.

What AI assistant memory actually does

Memory carries selected information from one conversation into later ones so an assistant can personalize its replies. Depending on the product, that may mean items you explicitly asked it to save, information the system selected from previous chats, or both. It is not necessarily a complete or accurate transcript of what you said.

OpenAI states that “Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation.” Its ChatGPT documentation distinguishes saved memories from information referenced from chat history, where those controls are available. The exact feature set varies by plan, region, platform, and workspace. OpenAI’s current Memory in ChatGPT guidance describes the available controls; its 2025 announcement provides product-history context.

How a remembered detail can become a problem

Old context can shape a new answer

A detail that was useful in one conversation may be stale, sensitive, or irrelevant to a later request. If it influences the assistant’s response anyway, personalization can feel intrusive or push the answer in an unwanted direction. That is a plausible mechanism, not proof of what caused any particular user’s experience.

Ruune AI Voice Recorder, Transcribe & Summarize, Personal AI Assistant
  • Under 3mm thin and attaches magnetically to the back of your phone or case
  • Over 20 hours of recording on one charge + wireless charging
  • Automatic transcription with speaker separation, turning long conversations into searchable notes, summaries, and action items.
  • Connect your daily calendar and share with team via email instantly
  • Integrate to the apps you already use, so notes and follow-ups flow into your existing workflow instead of sitting in a separate app.

The user-facing memory summary may not show everything the system can reference. OpenAI says the summary is high-level and may omit details or sources. Where available, response sources can help identify context that contributed to personalization, but may not expose every factor.

System-selected information can include inferences

A 2026 study by Abhisek Dash, Soumi Das, Elisabeth Kirsten, and colleagues analyzed 2,050 memory entries from 80 real-world ChatGPT users. Within that dataset, the study authors reported that 96% of memories were created unilaterally by the conversational system, 28% contained GDPR-defined personal data, 52% contained psychological insights about participants, and 84% were directly grounded in user context. These are findings about the study’s sample—not estimates for all ChatGPT users, all memory products, or the general population. The authors proposed an “Attribution Shield” framework; it should not be mistaken for a user-facing ChatGPT feature. The study record is hosted by TU Delft.

At night, sleep mode turns off the display, and adaptive brightness adjusts to any light, so this digital wall planner never disturbs rest or strains eyes.

Personalization can affect safety, too

A separate 2026 ACL paper examined “intent legitimation”: remembered benign context can bias a personalized agent toward treating an inherently harmful request as legitimate. Across the paper’s tested memory-augmented frameworks and base models, personalization increased attack success rates by 15.8%–243.7% relative to stateless baselines. That wide range is a benchmark result under evaluated conditions, not a prediction of how often a commercial assistant will fail in everyday use. Read the ACL paper.

Memory poisoning is a documented risk scenario, not evidence of a confirmed attack

Microsoft Security described a hypothetical delayed memory-poisoning scenario in which hidden malicious instructions in a shared document could be carried into an assistant’s memory and affect a later conversation. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Copilot uses sanitization checks for memory writes, task-adherence checks for explicit writes, tenant-level personalization policy, and audit logging of memory updates. These are controls Microsoft describes for its own product, not universal protections or proof that the hypothetical attack occurred. Microsoft’s explanation of the scenario and controls.

What to check if an assistant’s memory seems involved

Start with evidence rather than assuming a cause. Note the response that felt wrong, the conversation and date, and any remembered detail or source the product exposes. Then review the assistant’s memory and settings. If the behavior began after a particular detail was retained, that timing may be useful, but it does not by itself establish causation.

For ChatGPT, OpenAI says users can ask, “What do you remember about me?” and review or correct remembered information where those controls are available. You can also inspect response sources when shown. Treat the summary as a useful view, not necessarily a complete inventory of context.

How to limit or remove ChatGPT personalization

These are ChatGPT-specific examples, not instructions for every AI assistant. Controls can vary by account, platform, region, plan, and workspace, so check the current interface and Help Center guidance before relying on a particular option.

Review or correct what is remembered

  1. Ask ChatGPT, “What do you remember about me?” or open the memory controls available in your account settings.
  2. Review the displayed information and correct or delete items you do not want used, where those controls are available.
  3. For a response that appears personalized, inspect any response-source information the interface provides. It may help identify relevant context but may not show every factor.

Delete the memory and its source

Turning memory off does not delete past chats. Deleting a chat alone may not remove a separately stored memory. OpenAI’s guidance says to delete the saved memory and the chat where it originated; also remove relevant files or connected sources where applicable. Deletion can take time to propagate, and OpenAI says deleted saved-memory logs may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. Consult the current Help Center instructions for the controls available to your account.

Use a temporary conversation when you do not want personalization memory updated

ChatGPT Temporary Chat can be used when you do not want a conversation to create or update memories for personalization, subject to account and workspace restrictions. OpenAI notes that saving a temporary chat converts it to a regular chat under the account’s settings. Temporary Chat is not the same as deleting existing memories or chats.

Keep model-training settings separate from memory

Personalization and whether chats may be used to improve models are separate settings. OpenAI says personal ChatGPT accounts control model-improvement use through Data Controls; content in Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used for model training by default. Those statements describe OpenAI’s product policies, not the behavior of other assistants. Check the current Memory guidance and account settings for applicable controls.

What this means for your own experience

The evidence supports a measured conclusion: persistent memory can shape later answers, and studies have identified privacy and safety concerns in specific samples and test settings. It cannot establish that memory caused the incident described in the headline—or how common such incidents are. For an individual case, the most useful next step is to inspect the available memory and source controls, then distinguish what the assistant demonstrably retained from what you suspect it inferred.
