To let Claude Code open a real browser and interact with a page, register Playwright MCP with one command: claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest. You’ll need Node.js 20 or newer. After restarting Claude Code, ask it to navigate, inspect the page, take an action, and inspect the result.
What Playwright MCP lets Claude Code do
Playwright MCP is a server that gives an MCP-compatible client such as Claude Code tools for browser navigation and interaction. Its distinctive workflow uses a structured accessibility snapshot to identify page elements. Claude Code can then act on those elements and inspect the updated page state, rather than relying on a screenshot alone. See Playwright’s MCP introduction for the interaction model and tool overview.
Set up Playwright MCP in Claude Code
- Check Node.js. The Playwright MCP installation guide lists Node.js 20 or newer as a requirement. Check your version with
node --version; if it is below 20, install a supported version before continuing. - Register the server. In a terminal where the Claude Code command is available, run
claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest. This is the command shown in the Playwright MCP README and the installation guide. - Start a new Claude Code session. The server is available in the next session, so restart Claude Code if it was already open. Playwright’s installation guide says the browser is downloaded automatically on first use.
- Try a harmless demo flow. Ask Claude Code to open
https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc, add a todo item, and report what changed. This is the kind of first interaction shown in the official example.
What a successful browser interaction looks like
The expected pattern is inspect → act → inspect. Claude Code navigates to the page and receives a structured accessibility snapshot containing information about the page and references to elements. It can use an identified reference to click, type, or fill a field, then inspect a fresh snapshot to check the resulting state. For the TodoMVC example, that means finding the textbox, entering a todo, and checking that the item appears afterward. The precise result can depend on the page’s structure and behavior.
This flow does not require screenshots as its primary way to identify elements: the documented interaction is based on accessibility snapshots and element references. Site authentication, dynamic content, or unusual page behavior can still affect whether a requested action works as expected.

Choose how the browser runs and remembers state
For a local setup, the browser is headed by default, so you can watch it open and interact with the page. Add --headless to the server arguments when you want it to run without a visible window. The available settings are documented in Playwright MCP configuration options.
| Choice | Behavior | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Headed (default) | Opens a visible browser window. | Useful when you want to watch the flow. |
Headless (--headless) |
Runs without a visible browser window. | Useful when you do not need to watch the interaction. |
| Persistent profile (default) | Preserves login state and cookies between sessions. | Useful for workflows that intentionally reuse a browser profile. |
| Isolated mode | Starts a fresh session and does not save browser state to disk. Storage state can be supplied when an isolated session needs preloaded authentication. | Useful when you want session state separated from the persistent profile. |
Choose a profile deliberately if the browser may contain sensitive login state, and avoid sharing authentication state. The configuration also supports selecting Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, or Microsoft Edge. For a remote browser, it documents connecting through a Playwright endpoint or a CDP endpoint; those are optional configurations rather than part of the basic local setup.

When to use MCP instead of Playwright CLI
Playwright’s documentation positions MCP for specialized agentic loops that benefit from persistent state and iterative inspection of page structure. It positions the CLI as a more token-efficient command workflow for coding agents working with large codebases. That is the project’s qualitative guidance, not a quantified performance comparison. If your goal is to have Claude Code inspect and interact with a live page, MCP matches that workflow; if your work is better expressed as shell commands, consider the CLI approach described in the Playwright MCP introduction.
