To download an individual .tex file from Overleaf, download the project’s source ZIP, extract it, and open the file inside. In the editor, choose File > Download as source (.zip). If that option is not under File in the redesigned editor, check the dropdown next to the project name.
Download and open the .tex file

Open the Overleaf project containing the file.

Choose File > Download as source (.zip). In the redesigned editor, look in the dropdown beside the project name if the menu item is not where expected. Overleaf’s project-download instructions describe the source ZIP, and its redesigned editor guide notes that project actions are available from the project-name dropdown.

Save the ZIP file. Overleaf says it is usually saved in your browser’s Downloads folder, depending on your browser settings, and is named after the project by default.

Extract the ZIP with your device’s archive utility, then open the required
.texfile from the extracted folder.#1 Best Overall
The archive can include supporting project files, such as images and bibliography files. Keep the extracted folder structure intact if you plan to continue working with the project locally.
What the source ZIP includes—and what it does not
The source ZIP is not the compiled PDF. To download the PDF, choose File > Download as PDF or use the Download PDF control beside the PDF preview. These are separate downloads, as explained in Overleaf’s project-download documentation.

The standard source ZIP contains project source files, but omits generated compiler outputs such as .aux, .log, and .toc. If you need a generated file, open Logs and output files > Other logs and files, then download the file you want. For example, Overleaf’s generated-files guide describes retrieving a bibliography output such as output.bbl.
Download an earlier version or prepare an arXiv submission
Get an earlier project snapshot
The regular source download exports the current project version. To retrieve an older snapshot, open History, select the version, open its More Actions menu, and choose Download this version. See Overleaf’s history and versioning guide.
Include generated files for an arXiv submission
Overleaf’s arXiv submission workflow can create a ZIP with source and generated files, including a .bbl file. Downloading that ZIP does not itself submit the files to arXiv. Use this workflow when you need a submission package rather than just the project’s source files; see Overleaf’s generated-files documentation.
