Local dimming is useful, but not essential for every display. On an LED-backlit LCD, it can deepen dark areas while keeping bright highlights visible—most noticeably in dark scenes and HDR. The result depends on how well the display controls its dimming zones: weak control can create halos, flicker, or lost shadow detail. OLED takes a different approach, lighting each pixel independently rather than dimming a backlight.
What local dimming does
An LCD does not produce light on its own; a backlight illuminates the image. Local dimming divides that backlight into zones that can be adjusted separately. The display can dim zones behind darker parts of a scene while keeping zones behind bright areas illuminated, increasing the perceived contrast between them. This can make blacks look deeper and highlights stand out, particularly in dark scenes and HDR content. RTINGS explains its TV local-dimming tests, and Samsung Electronics America describes local dimming in its TV contrast guide.
Zones are larger than individual pixels, so local dimming is a compromise rather than pixel-level light control. When a bright object and dark background share a zone, the backlight may illuminate both. The glow around the object is often called blooming or halation. Samsung Display explains halation and why OLED avoids this backlight effect.
When local dimming is most useful
Dark-room viewing and subtitles
Dark scenes make the difference between bright and dim areas easier to see. With precise zone control, the display can keep dark parts of the image darker while preserving highlights. Poor control is also easier to spot in these conditions: subtitles, stars, or a small lamp against a dark background may have a visible glow around them.

HDR movies and games
HDR often places bright highlights next to dark areas, so effective local dimming can make the image feel more contrast-rich. For gaming, check how a specific display behaves in its game mode: some displays change dimming behavior in low-latency modes. RTINGS details monitor-specific local-dimming behavior, including contrast, blooming, black crush, transitions, and flicker, in its monitor local-dimming tests.
Bright rooms
RTINGS notes that local dimming can help an LED monitor get bright enough for use in a well-lit room. Whether that matters to you depends on the display and room; local dimming is not, by itself, a guarantee of a better-looking image.

OLED displays
OLED pixels emit their own light, so an OLED display has no LCD backlight to divide into dimming zones. It can control light at the pixel level and avoids the specific halo mechanism caused by a shared backlight zone. That is a different display design, not evidence that OLED is universally preferable across brightness, cost, longevity, or every use.

- Black levels and contrast: With local dimming enabled, do dark areas look deeper without making the rest of the image look muted?
- Blooming: Look for a halo around subtitles, stars, a bright cursor, or another small bright object on a dark background.
- Shadow detail: Check whether dimming removes subtle detail in dark clothing, corners, or night scenes. This loss is often called black crush.
- Motion and transitions: Watch moving bright objects against dark backgrounds. The glow may trail, the object may appear dim at its leading edge, or zone changes may be visible as flicker.
- Settings and mode: Try the available dimming levels with the content and picture mode you actually use. More aggressive dimming may increase contrast but make artifacts more obvious. Some monitors lock local dimming on in HDR, so switching it off may not be an option.
- Backlight layout and processing: Full-array and Mini LED designs generally allow finer control than edge-lit layouts, but the dimming algorithm and implementation matter too.
For model-specific testing, RTINGS describes its TV tests as using static bright-and-dark patterns and moving objects; its results include subjective judgments, not a universal measure of how every viewer will perceive a display.

Why zone count is not a picture-quality ranking
More zones can allow finer control, but the count alone does not tell you how well the zones are managed or how the screen looks in practice. RTINGS lists the AOC Q27G3XMN with 336 dimming zones and the AOC Q27G40XMN with 1,152; these are model specifications, not proof that the second monitor delivers better local dimming. RTINGS cautions buyers not to choose a TV solely by zone count, and notes that Mini LED monitor performance varies by implementation. Its Mini LED versus OLED monitor comparison discusses those model differences.
The pixel-level contrast of OLED is another comparison, not a like-for-like zone count: RTINGS uses 8,294,400 independently emitting pixels as an example for a 4K OLED display. That figure describes the cited 4K example, not every OLED resolution or panel.

So, is local dimming necessary?
No. It is a worthwhile feature when you watch dark scenes or HDR on an LED-backlit LCD and the particular display controls its zones well. It matters less if you rarely notice contrast differences, mostly use the screen in bright conditions, or find blooming and other artifacts distracting. Read current reviews of the exact model and, if you can inspect it in person, compare dark scenes, subtitles, small bright objects, and motion. The RTINGS TV comparison of Mini LED and OLED models offers category context, but model-specific behavior should guide a purchase decision.
