Electronic image stabilization (EIS) is a digital technique that reduces the appearance of camera shake by shifting or cropping image frames. It often uses motion-sensor data to guide those adjustments. Unlike optical image stabilization (OIS), EIS changes image data rather than physically moving a lens element or camera sensor.
How does electronic image stabilization work?
A common video implementation captures more image than the final frame needs. The camera then selects a smaller crop and shifts that crop as the camera moves, keeping the recorded view steadier. The available margin, motion analysis and processing differ by device.
In a typical pipeline, a gyroscope measures the direction and amount of camera movement. The image processor uses those measurements to choose a crop that moves in the opposite direction. For the correction to match the right image, the motion readings must be synchronized with their corresponding frames. InvenSense describes EIS as “a jitter compensation method for a video stream” in its application note.

GoPro, for example, describes HyperSmooth as analyzing raw camera motion and transforming it into stabilized motion. Its explanation says EIS crops a small amount from the edge of a frame to lessen camera motion; that describes GoPro’s system, not a universal specification.

How is EIS different from OIS?

Huawei distinguishes crop-based EIS from mechanical OIS and sensor-shift stabilization. Sony describes hybrid stabilization as simultaneous OIS and EIS on specified Xperia models. The labels alone do not establish how well a particular camera will steady footage: implementation and supported recording modes vary.
What are EIS’s tradeoffs and limits?
It can narrow the view
Because the processor needs room to shift the crop, EIS can reduce the visible field of view. GoPro says its HyperSmooth system has a stabilization margin of about 5%; that figure applies to GoPro’s implementation and should not be treated as a general EIS measurement.

Performance depends on the camera and recording mode
Mode, frame rate, lens stabilization and whether the camera is mounted on a tripod can affect whether EIS is available or useful. Panasonic’s AU-EVA1 instructions illustrate how specific those restrictions can be: EIS is unavailable in a listed 4/3 crop-and-mix sensor mode, its effect weakens at frame rates of 24 fps or lower, and it does not operate while optical stabilization on the lens is operating. Panasonic also says disabling EIS on a tripod can produce a more natural image. These are AU-EVA1-specific instructions, not rules for all cameras.
Check the documentation for the exact device, lens and recording mode to find out when stabilization operates and whether it changes the framing.

What does EIS mean in a camera or phone?
If a camera or phone lists EIS, it means the device digitally processes captured image data to reduce apparent shake. It may use a crop that can be repositioned, but the specific method and its limits depend on the manufacturer’s implementation. EIS is not the same as OIS, though some devices combine the two.
