You can reuse a JTL-Wawi integration across merchants without replacing their ERP: in the JTL Cloud App model described here, Wawi stays local and connects to JTL Cloud. The key is to separate shared integration logic from merchant-specific mappings, then validate the product with one client and a second setup before pursuing public distribution.
How to tell whether a custom integration can become an app
Review recent client projects by the problem they solve, not by the customer who commissioned them. A repeated request may be a product candidate when its core logic is stable and the differences between merchants can be handled as configuration.
- The need recurs: several clients ask for substantially the same outcome.
- The logic is shared: mappings, thresholds, or other merchant-specific values vary, but the underlying workflow does not.
- The workflow is not unusually bespoke: it is not dependent on one merchant’s unusual processes.
- The value is explainable: a merchant could understand the app’s purpose from a listing without first needing a custom sales meeting.
Potential examples include accounting exports, shipping and label workflows, reporting dashboards, marketplace-specific data preparation, and stock or purchasing alerts. These are examples of possible product ideas, not confirmation that a particular JTL API scope supports them.

What changes—and what does not—in the JTL Cloud App model
Moving the integration to a cloud app does not mean replacing the merchant’s ERP. In the setup described by JTL-Software Engineering, JTL-Wawi remains local and connects to JTL Cloud; the app runs as the shared cloud-facing part of the integration.

The source article says merchants connect Wawi to JTL Cloud using a JTL ID, then start the JTL-Wawi API with cloud connectivity enabled. It gives JTL-Wawi version 2.2.0 or higher as a prerequisite. Treat that version and setup detail as the article’s stated requirement, not as verified current implementation guidance; check JTL’s current official instructions before relying on it. The article’s operational point is that the app can work with Wawi data only while the required Wawi API connection is running.
A staged path from client project to cloud app
- Choose a known workflow. Start with a willing existing client whose integration you understand. This gives you a concrete use case rather than an abstract product specification.
- Package it as a private app. The article describes sharing a private app with selected merchants through activation codes. It says private apps avoid the public App Store review route; current policy and timelines are not established here.
- Test with a second merchant. Check whether the same business logic works in a different setup. Convert client-specific code differences into configuration where practical; repeated exceptions may indicate the product is not yet general enough.
- Consider public distribution after validation. Once the app works across different merchant setups, you can consider submitting it for public App Store review. Confirm current submission requirements directly with JTL.
Repeated deployments versus a shared app
This is a qualitative decision framework, not a measured cost comparison. A shared app may reduce repeated deployment work, but it concentrates operating responsibility in the app owner.

Operating responsibilities that move to the app owner
A shared app does not eliminate the work of running an integration; it changes where that work sits. The app owner must operate the hosted service and keep merchants’ data and settings isolated. The JTL tenant also becomes an important part of mapping each merchant to the app’s own data.

- Hosting and availability: arrange hosting and take responsibility for the app’s uptime.
- Monitoring and maintenance: detect failures and maintain the app as its dependencies and merchant setups change.
- Tenant isolation: ensure one merchant’s data and configuration are not exposed to another.
- Connection support: account for the local Wawi API connection, which must be available for the app to work with Wawi data.
Managed hosting and basic monitoring may cover parts of this work, but they are not automatically included in the JTL model described by the source. No provider, service level, architecture, or price is specified.

How app revenue and client services can coexist
The proposed transition does not require abandoning client services. You can continue offering onboarding, customisation for needs outside the standard app, and consulting on related workflows. The source describes JTL as handling merchant billing for App Store apps and developers as managing payouts through Stripe Connect. It does not establish fees, payout terms, or current eligibility, so confirm those details with JTL before planning around them.

- Can the repeated client requests be served by the same core workflow, with differences expressed as configuration?
- Can you support merchants without depending on bespoke access and knowledge for every installation?
- Can your app securely separate each merchant’s data and configuration?
- Are you prepared to operate hosting, monitoring, maintenance, and connection support?
- Have you checked current JTL requirements for Wawi, API connectivity, private apps, public review, and billing?
