Driftnet is presented as a web app that captures text, links, ideas, reminders, and spoken notes in one place, then sorts them into ideas, resources, tasks, or structured workspace items. Its goal is to carry context forward and suggest a next step instead of leaving you with another pile of saved material. Those are the maker’s descriptions; the app’s current availability and performance have not been independently verified.
What Driftnet is meant to do
The problem it addresses is familiar: you save a link and an idea separately, then cannot remember how they fit together or what you meant to do next. As the project write-up puts it, “No context, no plan, no next step.” The maker frames the underlying gap this way: “Saved doesn’t mean organised. Organised doesn’t mean actionable.”
Driftnet’s design statement is “The idea is catch, structure, act.” A user can type or paste material, or capture a spoken note. The app is intended to classify each capture and file it as an idea, resource, task, or an item in a more structured workspace. The maker’s point is not that saving itself is difficult, but that filing information and connecting it to action often takes enough effort that people do not do it.

The project write-up describes the product and its intended workflow, not a measured productivity benefit. Its author’s broader claim that information gets lost when filing takes more effort than it is worth is a design rationale, not a published research finding. Read the project write-up.

How a capture can become a workspace item
The maker’s example starts with a hackathon announcement. Rather than leave it as a saved link, Driftnet is described as turning it into a workspace with a name, a deadline converted to UTC, mentioned technologies, and starter tasks. A related follow-up can then be attached to that existing workspace. This is the intended distinction from a flat inbox: a capture may be connected to a project and given a possible next action.
Loose material can also remain categorized as an idea, resource, or task when it does not belong in a workspace. The write-up says the system uses knowledge of existing workspaces when processing captures, so a later item may connect to ongoing work rather than create an unrelated entry. These capabilities are described by the maker and have not been independently tested here.

What the maker says is under the hood
According to the project write-up, a Mastra agent classifies and extracts each capture using templates and information about existing workspaces. The author names Gemma 4 as the reasoning model, ElevenLabs Scribe as the voice transcription service, Postgres for per-user rows, and Render for hosting. Browser speech recognition is described as the voice fallback when an ElevenLabs key is unavailable. If the model call fails, the maker says the capture is retained as a loose idea.
The author reports that the first capture took 84 seconds during development, and that later captures took 2 to 6 seconds after the model’s thinking level was set to minimal. These are the maker’s development observations from 2026, not independent benchmarks or a guarantee of typical response time.

What is known—and not known—about privacy
The maker describes account separation and notes that open model weights could make it possible to point the model pipeline at a machine the maker controls. The write-up also says the current app calls Gemma through Google’s API. That means the possibility of a self-controlled model setup should not be confused with a claim that the hosted app currently keeps data off third-party infrastructure.
The available description does not establish a complete privacy policy, data-retention terms, or an independent security review. Anyone considering storing sensitive material should seek those specifics from the service before relying on it for that purpose.

What early feedback does—and does not—show
The maker reports informal feedback from one friend, Samuel, described as an intended user: “One thing I can say is that this is crazy. Love it bro, it does just what you said it does.” The author says that feedback led to a change so inbox and workspace entries open to detail views. It is a useful account of an early design iteration, but one person’s reaction is not a usability study or evidence of broad user satisfaction.
Who might find the approach useful
Driftnet’s proposed workflow may appeal to someone who saves links, ideas, or voice notes but struggles to reconnect them to a project or a next step. Its claimed cross-device access is through an account, with the maker saying captures can be available on laptop and phone. Whether that approach fits depends on details not established by the write-up, including how well classification works in practice and how the service handles stored data.
Best Value
A conventional notes app can be enough if the main need is simply to keep text or links. Driftnet’s intended difference is the step between keeping an item and structuring it into actionable work. The project write-up does not provide a comparative test against notes apps, so it cannot establish that Driftnet is more accurate, faster, or easier to use.
Availability and practical limits
The write-up says the maker had not paid for any captures at the time it was written. That is a time-bound personal account, not a current price, free-use promise, or indication of future pricing. Current pricing, operational status, and the linked demo’s availability are not established by the project description. Check the service’s current terms before signing up or adding important information.
