Endpoint protection can make it harder for malware to steal or misuse credentials on a device, but it cannot make secrets safe on its own. Passwords, API keys, connection strings, cryptographic keys, and access tokens need protection across the endpoint, identity system, storage, and credential lifecycle.

What endpoint protection means for secrets

Endpoint protection refers to device-level measures that help prevent malware from compromising a computer or other endpoint, and detect or limit malicious activity when prevention fails. These controls can reduce the chance that malware will capture credentials, interfere with an authenticator, or use a device to authenticate on an attacker’s behalf.

Secrets include more than passwords. They can be API keys, connection strings, cryptographic and software-authenticator keys, and access or session tokens. Some enable access directly; others can be used to obtain or validate access.

Endpoint defenses are one layer in a broader system. A device can be hardened and monitored while a long-lived token remains valid, a signing key is mishandled, or a secret is exposed in source code. Those risks require controls beyond endpoint software.

How a compromised device can put credentials at risk

Malware on an endpoint may log keystrokes, read an out-of-band secret, compromise a software authenticator, or cause authentication to occur for an attacker. It may also enable remote access through the device. NIST discusses these threats and mitigations in its SP 800-63B security considerations.

Tokens create a related risk: an attacker who steals or misuses a valid token may gain access without entering the password again. Endpoint security can help reduce the chance of theft and support detection, but token validation, protection, expiration, and revocation are separate parts of the defense.

NIST reported one example on September 15, 2026: attackers used forged tokens derived from a stolen commercial signing key and stole more than 60,000 emails from a single agency. That is a figure from one incident, not a measure of how often endpoint credential theft occurs. NIST’s incident announcement includes the details.

Control layer Main question What to evaluate
Endpoint hardening and prevention Does it reduce the chance malware can access credentials on covered devices? Device coverage, threat prevention, configuration, and administration
Detection and response Can suspicious theft or token use be identified and acted on? Signal quality, response speed, and integration with identity controls
Token and key controls Are tokens and signing keys issued, protected, verified, and revoked appropriately? Token lifetime, key protection, validation, revocation, and operational ownership
Authentication hardware Does authentication require a protected factor and user action? Supported accounts, protocols, devices, recovery method, and deployment practicality

Microsoft’s guidance for protecting tokens in Microsoft Entra ID describes endpoint hardening alongside detection and mitigation of successful theft and protection against replay. It is implementation guidance for that ecosystem, not a product ranking or a guarantee that a device cannot be compromised: Protecting tokens in Microsoft Entra ID.

How to protect secrets in practice

Harden and monitor devices

Use appropriate endpoint protections, keep device configurations under administration, and monitor for suspicious activity. Include suspected token theft in the response plan so teams can investigate the device and act on affected identities or credentials. Microsoft’s token-protection guidance covers hardening as well as detection, mitigation, and replay protections.

Keep service secrets out of source code

Microsoft Learn advises: “Never hardcode passwords, API keys, connection strings, or other secrets in source code.” For service credentials, its guidance points to managed identities or key vaults where appropriate. See Handling Passwords.

NIST’s September 15, 2026 announcement about the final report notes workload identity considerations and reinforces the use of short-lived tokens rather than relying on static credentials and secrets: NIST announcement on the final report.

Consider hardware-backed, phishing-resistant authentication

NIST lists hardware authenticators that require physical action as a mitigation for some endpoint-compromise threats. A FIDO2 security key is one example, but check that the accounts, operating systems, and services you use support it, and plan for recovery if the key is lost. It does not protect secrets already exposed on a compromised endpoint or replace endpoint security and secret management.

What endpoint protection cannot establish

The sources cited here support functional criteria for evaluating control layers, but they do not establish a tested commercial product ranking or a general prevalence statistic for endpoint credential theft. A sound decision therefore depends on your device coverage, identity architecture, secret types, and ability to respond—not on assuming that one endpoint product eliminates credential risk.
