DSD over PCM (DoP) is a way to carry DSD audio inside PCM-formatted frames so a compatible DAC can recognize and play the DSD data. The PCM framing is a transport wrapper: DoP does not, by itself, convert the DSD payload into ordinary PCM audio samples.
How DoP carries DSD audio
DoP stands for “DSD Audio over PCM Frames.” The DoP standard, Version 1.1, describes a method for transferring DSD audio over PCM frames, primarily for PCM-oriented links such as USB. The PCM format lets a connection carry the data; marker bytes identify the frames as containing DSD so a compatible DAC can recover the payload. DoP standard, Version 1.1
For the Japan Audio Society’s 2.8 MHz DSD example, the carrier is 24-bit/176.4 kHz PCM. Each frame uses 16 bits for DSD data and 8 bits for marker information. That PCM carrier rate is part of the framing method, not evidence that the DSD has been converted into PCM samples. Japan Audio Society glossary

How DoP differs from native DSD and PCM conversion

These are different ways to handle a DSD source. For example, Sony distinguishes its native mode, which uses ASIO 2.1, from DoP. Music Player Daemon (MPD) documents DoP, native DSD, and conversion to PCM as separate playback choices. Sony Hi-Res Audio Player support · MPD DSD playback documentation
What you need for DoP playback
- Playback software: It must be able to output DoP. MPD requires DoP to be enabled explicitly because the player cannot determine whether the connected DAC supports it.
- A compatible output path: The operating system, driver, and any intervening audio software must preserve the required PCM frame width and data. MPD specifies bit-perfect 24-bit PCM support for its DoP playback path.
- A DoP-capable DAC: A device that accepts ordinary PCM is not necessarily able to recognize DoP. Check the DAC’s manual for explicit DoP support and the DSD rates it accepts.
DoP support must exist across the whole playback chain. A compatible DAC alone is not enough if the player cannot emit DoP or the software and driver path changes the frames. MPD DSD playback documentation

How to check why DoP is not working
- Check the DAC manual. Look for explicit DoP support and the supported DSD rates. Do not infer DoP support just because the DAC accepts PCM or has a USB input.
- Check the player’s output mode. Select DoP rather than native DSD or DSD-to-PCM conversion, and confirm that DoP is enabled where the software requires it.
- Check the operating-system and driver path. Make sure it can pass the required PCM data and word width without altering the stream. MPD’s documented path requires bit-perfect 24-bit PCM support.
- Check the source rate against the entire chain. The player, driver, transport, and DAC may not support the same maximum DSD rate. A high-rate source may need a lower rate or another playback mode.
Rate handling varies by software. Audirvāna documents lowering a DSD256 source to DSD128 or DSD64 for DoP playback on a compatible DAC, with the corresponding DoP carrier rate. That behavior is specific to Audirvāna’s documented playback path, not a universal rule for all players. Audirvāna support: DSD over PCM
Does DoP improve sound quality?
DoP specifies a transport method, not a sound-quality advantage. The cited standard and implementation documents do not establish that DoP sounds better or worse than native DSD or DSD-to-PCM conversion. When choosing a playback mode, the practical questions are whether the player and driver support it, whether the DAC recognizes it, what DSD rates the complete chain handles, and whether the signal remains DSD or is converted to PCM.
