Wonderware System Platform is now called AVEVA System Platform. It is industrial software for building and running supervisory and advanced SCADA, MES, and IIoT applications. Its object-based design lets teams model operational assets with reusable templates, then develop, visualize, deploy, and monitor applications through a centralized platform.

What is AVEVA System Platform?

AVEVA System Platform is an industrial operations software platform used to develop applications that connect operational assets, people, processes, and data. AVEVA positions it for supervisory and advanced SCADA, manufacturing execution system (MES), and industrial internet of things (IIoT) applications. Its product description emphasizes centralized application development, visualization, control, and data integration.

These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent findings about performance or results. AVEVA’s System Platform product overview and System Platform datasheet describe the product’s scope and features.

Why is it called Wonderware System Platform?

Wonderware is the product’s former branding. AVEVA now presents it as AVEVA System Platform, not as a separate platform with a current Wonderware brand. AVEVA explains the transition in its Wonderware-to-AVEVA announcement. Use the current name when referring to the product today; the former name is useful when identifying older installations or documentation.

How does System Platform work?

System Platform organizes applications around software objects that represent real operational assets or patterns. Teams define reusable templates and create derived objects from them, helping standardize how similar equipment or processes are represented. Applications can then combine those models with visualization, control, and operational data.

Application Server and IDE

Application Server is a central component. In AVEVA’s documentation for System Platform 2023 R2 Patch 01, it includes a runtime element and the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) used to configure applications. The documented functions include configuring and maintaining application objects, managing IDE and application security, deploying applications, monitoring runtime behavior, and troubleshooting. It also describes collaboration on AVEVA OMI or managed InTouch applications. These details refer to that specific release, not automatically to every version.

See AVEVA’s Application Server guide for System Platform 2023 R2 Patch 01 for release-specific information.

Visualization and operational information

System Platform can be used with AVEVA OMI and managed InTouch applications. AVEVA describes responsive visualization across workstations and mobile devices, along with access to operational information such as real-time data, alarms, history, graphics, reports, and work orders. Which components and views are used depends on the application design.

Integration and scale

AVEVA describes System Platform as integrating control and operational data and supporting distributed architectures. The product overview also describes adding application engines for horizontal scaling. Those are architectural capabilities; the appropriate topology depends on a deployment’s requirements and design, and the product description does not establish performance for a particular installation.

How is System Platform different from InTouch HMI and MES?

These products can be related in an industrial software environment, but they address different jobs. System Platform is the broader application and operations layer; InTouch HMI is focused on human-machine interface visualization; MES manages production workflows and execution.

Product or layer Primary role When it is relevant
AVEVA System Platform Developing and running operational applications for visualization, control, and data integration When an application needs an operational model and broader coordination of assets, data, and applications
InTouch HMI HMI visualization When the primary requirement is an operator interface
MES Managing production workflows and execution When the requirement centers on production execution and workflow management

Exact boundaries and available combinations can vary by product version and configuration; confirm them in the current AVEVA documentation for the products involved. The distinction above follows AVEVA’s System Platform product description.

What should you check before installing or upgrading it?

Installation, migration, licensing, operating-system compatibility, and security requirements are release-specific. For example, the System Platform 2023 R2 Patch 01 readme describes supported migration paths with minimum source versions and server-based licensing that must be activated before use. Do not assume those details apply unchanged to another release.

  • Identify the installed release and the target release.
  • Check the target release’s readme, installation guide, and compatibility information for supported migration paths, operating systems, licensing, and security requirements.
  • Confirm the required licenses are activated before using the target release, following its documentation.

AVEVA’s System Platform 2023 R2 Patch 01 readme is an example of version-specific guidance, not a substitute for the documentation for a different target release.

Where can a beginner learn the product?

AVEVA’s System Platform Get Started guide points readers to task-based documentation for Application Server, Industrial Graphics, scripting, Object Viewer, alarms, and events. Starting with the guide for the task you need—such as configuring an object, building a visualization, or working with alarms—offers a more practical route than treating the platform as a single interface.

See AVEVA’s System Platform Get Started 2023 R2 guide. AVEVA Community also provides historical training context in its Introduction to Application Server 2017 Update 3; because it covers an older release, use it as background rather than current installation guidance.
