To calculate an APK’s SHA-256 checksum in JavaScript, read the selected file with File.arrayBuffer(), pass its bytes to crypto.subtle.digest("SHA-256", buffer), then display the returned bytes as hexadecimal. The page can do this locally without uploading the APK. Compare the result with a checksum from a source you trust; hashing alone does not verify the APK’s signer or scan it for malware.
Build a browser-based APK checksum checker
This small page lets someone choose an APK, calculate its whole-file SHA-256 digest, and optionally compare it with an expected checksum. The file extension is only a selection hint: this code hashes the chosen file’s bytes and does not establish that the file is a valid APK.

</script>In production, serve the page in a secure context such as HTTPS. MDN documents SubtleCrypto.digest() as available only in secure contexts in supporting browsers. If the API is unavailable, the page reports that rather than implying a checksum was calculated.

How the JavaScript computes the digest
- Get the selected file. The file input exposes the user-selected file as a
Fileobject. Theacceptattribute helps the picker filter choices, but it is not validation. - Read the complete file.
await file.arrayBuffer()resolves to the file’s bytes as anArrayBuffer. - Hash those bytes.
await crypto.subtle.digest("SHA-256", buffer)returns the digest as binary data. MDN’s file-checksum example uses this same file-read and digest flow. - Format and compare. The conversion function writes each byte as two lowercase hexadecimal characters. Padding with
padStart(2, "0")preserves leading zeroes. The optional comparison trims whitespace around the entered value and ignores letter case.
The expected checksum must be the SHA-256 value for the exact APK file selected. A checksum for a different version or a repackaged file will not match.

Account for file size and user feedback
digest() does not support streaming: it requires the entire input in memory. The implementation therefore reads the complete APK before hashing, which can require substantial memory for large files. It displays a reading-and-hashing status while the asynchronous work is in progress and catches file-read or digest errors. It does not provide percentage progress because this API does not expose incremental hashing progress.
For a polished page, keep the selected filename, algorithm, digest, and comparison result clear; provide a copy action; and make failures visible. Avoid describing the result as an APK scan or safety verdict: the page only calculates a whole-file digest.

A checksum is not APK signature verification
A SHA-256 checksum lets you compare the exact bytes of a file with a known digest. That match is useful only if the expected value came through a source you trust. An untrusted or self-supplied checksum does not establish who created the APK.
Android’s apksigner documentation describes a separate command-line process for checking whether an APK signature verifies on the Android platform versions supported by that APK. To verify an APK and print signer certificate information, use Android SDK Build Tools’ command:

apksigner verify --print-certs app.apkAndroid also warns that modifying an APK after signing invalidates its signature. Use a checksum comparison when you need to confirm exact file bytes against a trusted published hash; use apksigner verify when your goal is APK signature verification and signer-certificate information.

What this page can and cannot tell you
- It can: calculate the SHA-256 digest of the selected file in the browser and compare it with an entered value.
- It cannot: prove the entered checksum is trustworthy, identify the APK’s publisher by itself, verify Android’s APK signing scheme, or determine whether the APK contains malware.
