To reconcile tenant tables against DNS, define the application’s expected hostnames and record values, query the DNS record types it manages with Node.js’s promise-based resolve* methods, and compare normalized sets. Keep a successful mismatch separate from an empty answer, NXDOMAIN, or query failure: each means something different, and a single resolver response is only an observation at that time.
Define the expected DNS state before querying
Start with a consistent view of the application’s desired state: which tenants are active, which hostnames belong to each tenant, and which DNS record types and values the application manages. The database engine and schema determine how to read that state; without them, there is no safe generic SQL or transaction guarantee to prescribe.
Group expected records by tenant and canonical hostname. Document the comparison rules before implementing them:
- Whether hostname case is normalized and how trailing dots are handled.
- How internationalized domain names are represented, including the chosen IDNA form.
- Whether duplicate records matter or whether values are compared as sets.
- Which parts of each record count as its value. For example, an MX record includes more than a hostname.
- Which record types are managed by the application; do not infer that contract from whichever records happen to be returned.
Read the tenant and hostname rows from a consistent database snapshot if the database supports one. Otherwise, recognize that the expected state itself may change while reconciliation is running.

Query DNS records with Node.js resolver methods
Use the node:dns/promises API to query DNS record types, such as resolve4, resolve6, resolveCname, resolveMx, resolveNs, resolveSoa, resolveSrv, and resolveTxt. The generic resolve(hostname, rrtype) method supports typed resolution as well. See the Node.js v26.8.2 DNS documentation for supported methods and options.
Do not substitute dns.lookup() when the job is to inspect DNS protocol records. Node.js documents that lookup() uses operating-system facilities and may not use DNS protocol at all; it can reflect local host configuration. The setServers() configuration affects resolve methods, not lookup(), and Node.js warns against changing servers while a DNS query is in progress.
For A and AAAA records, resolve4 and resolve6 can return TTL values when called with { ttl: true }. Other record types have their own result shapes, so normalize each type according to the fields your application manages.

Example: resolve A and AAAA records
This illustrative ES module function records a successful answer or the DNS error code. It does not implement a database read, a timeout policy, or a complete record normalizer; choose those to match your runtime and deployment.
import dns from 'node:dns/promises';
async function observeAddressRecords(hostname) {
const observedAt = new Date().toISOString();
const results = {};
for (const [type, query] of [
['A', () => dns.resolve4(hostname, { ttl: true })],
['AAAA', () => dns.resolve6(hostname, { ttl: true })],
]) {
try {
results[type] = {
status: 'success',
records: await query(),
};
} catch (error) {
results[type] = {
status: 'error',
code: error.code ?? 'UNKNOWN',
message: error.message,
};
}
}
return { hostname, observedAt, results };
}
A rejected promise is not an empty record set. Preserve its DNS error code and classify it rather than treating every rejection as proof that the hostname is absent.
Compare normalized sets and report outcomes distinctly
Compare the expected and observed values after applying the same deliberate normalization rules. Do not depend on response order: equivalent record sets can be returned in different orders. Retain enough detail to identify missing values, unexpected values, and changed record fields.

| Observation | What to report | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Successful answer matches expected set | Matched, with hostname, type, observation time, and returned TTL where available | The queried resolver returned the expected values at that time. |
| Successful answer differs | Missing expected values and extra observed values; identify changed fields where applicable | A confirmed mismatch in this response, not by itself proof of permanent drift. |
| Successful no-data response | No records of the queried type, distinguished from a matching empty expected set | The name may exist while having no data for that type; negative caching can affect what is observed. |
| NXDOMAIN | The resolver’s name-error result and its error code | The resolver reports that the queried name does not exist; this can also be cached. |
| Resolver, transport, or application timeout error | Error category and code, if present; never represent it as an empty set | The observation is indeterminate, not evidence that the expected records are absent. |
Some DNS libraries expose no-data and name-error outcomes as rejected promises with error codes. Use the codes documented for the Node.js version in use, and preserve them in the audit record. A timeout imposed by the application should likewise be distinguishable from a DNS answer.
Interpret TTLs, caching, and resolver vantage point
A recursive resolver’s answer describes what that resolver returned from its vantage point, not a globally complete or necessarily authoritative view. A check does not enumerate all DNS data worldwide. If authoritative state, geography, or a particular resolver matters, make the resolver and query policy explicit.
DNS records can remain in caches until their TTL expires. RFC 1034 defines the TTL as “a time limit on how long an RR can be kept in a cache” (RFC 1034). A shorter TTL can limit cache duration, but does not make distributed updates instantaneous. Negative answers and resolution failures also have caching behavior under the updated requirements in RFC 9520. A missing result may therefore reflect a cached negative observation or a transient failure rather than current authoritative state.

Treat each result as a time-stamped observation. Record the resolver context where known, the queried name and type, the result or error code, and the TTL when the method returns one. For negative results, record the outcome and observation time even when there is no positive-record TTL to store.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run checks without overwhelming the resolver
Bound concurrency and define an explicit timeout and retry policy. Neither Node.js’s API documentation nor the cited DNS standards establish a universally safe concurrency limit; choose limits based on the resolver and application capacity. Retries should be deliberate: they add query load, and repeating an error does not turn it into a valid empty answer.
Keep the database snapshot time and DNS observation time in the output. If tenant assignments can change during a run, a later comparison may reflect different expected-state and DNS moments. The report should make that timing visible rather than presenting the two states as perfectly simultaneous.

Keep an audit trail and gate remediation
Emit an audit record for each tenant, hostname, and record type. Include the tenant key, canonical hostname, record type, expected set, observed set or error code, timestamp, and TTL when available. These fields make it possible to distinguish a persistent mismatch from a transient or indeterminate observation.
Use a policy decision for corrective action. A successful mismatch may justify investigation, but automated deletion, disabling, or tenant remediation should require a confirmation policy. For transient discrepancies, repeat the observation before acting; do not delete expected records merely because one resolver query failed or returned a negative result.
