To pair most Samsung Smart Remotes, turn on the TV, point the remote at it, then hold Return/Back and Play/Pause together for at least three seconds. Wait for the on-screen pairing confirmation. Samsung says a Smart Remote normally connects automatically during initial setup; manual pairing is mainly needed if the connection is lost or the remote is switched to another TV. Button names and procedures vary by model and country.
Pair most Samsung Smart Remotes
- Turn on the TV. Aim the remote toward the TV. Samsung says the remote sensor is typically near the lower right or bottom center, though its position varies by model.
- Hold Return/Back and Play/Pause together for at least three seconds.
- Wait for the on-screen confirmation that pairing is complete. Test the connection by pressing Home or changing the volume.
Samsung describes its Smart Remote as designed to connect automatically during setup. It is designed to work with one device at a time, so you may need to pair it manually after moving it to a different Samsung TV. See Samsung Australia’s Smart Remote pairing instructions for its general procedure.
If pairing does not work
Check power and the connection indicator
Replace the batteries or charge the remote if its power is low, then try the pairing sequence again. Samsung Canada’s LED guide says two blinks when a button is pressed can indicate that Bluetooth is disconnected. Some basic functions, such as volume or channel control, may still work over infrared, while Smart features such as Voice require the Bluetooth connection. For the Smart Remote covered by Samsung Australia’s instructions, reboot it by holding Return and Enter together for at least ten seconds. To reset and pair again, hold Return and Voice for at least three seconds, then hold Return and Play/Pause for at least three seconds. These button combinations are model-specific; check the instructions for your TV before using them. Samsung’s Australian pairing and troubleshooting page describes these steps.

Power-cycle the TV and retry
If the TV still does not respond, power-cycle it and try pairing again. Samsung’s regional support instructions differ, so use the support page or manual for your exact TV model rather than assuming another model’s recovery steps apply.
Check which kind of remote you have
The Return-and-Play/Pause sequence is for Smart Remotes that pair with the TV; it is not universal. Samsung notes that remote images, buttons, and functions vary by model and country. A classic infrared Smart Touch Control may have a dedicated pairing button inside the battery compartment instead. For a rechargeable SolarCell remote, charge it if its battery is depleted. Samsung Canada’s guide describes charging via the solar cell in light or with USB-C. That guide also gives a battery-level menu path for supported Canadian TVs; menu availability and labels may differ elsewhere. Check the same Canadian troubleshooting guide or your TV manual for details.
Use your TV’s model-specific instructions when controls differ
Samsung’s regional directions do not always use the same hold duration: its general Australian instructions say at least three seconds, while a 2025 German Solar Smart Remote video example uses at least five seconds. Follow the pairing confirmation shown on your TV and the manual for your specific model. If the common sequence fails or the remote has different buttons, locate the TV’s manual or support page by its full model number.
