Error detection identifies data that fails a consistency check; error correction uses additional structure to locate or reconstruct some corrupted data. Both rely on redundancy, and neither can guarantee recovery from every possible error. The code’s minimum Hamming distance determines how many errors it can detect or correct reliably.

What error detection and correction mean

When data is encoded for transmission or storage, a system can add check bits or symbols to the original information. The resulting codeword contains redundancy: extra structure that lets a receiver test whether the received data is valid and, in some cases, infer what the original data was.

Error detection signals that corruption has occurred. Error correction goes further, using the code’s structure to identify or reconstruct corrupted bits or symbols without necessarily asking for another copy. The distinction matters: noticing a problem does not by itself reveal how to fix it.

How redundancy makes errors detectable

A code maps a data value to a longer, constrained representation called a codeword. Valid codewords are separated from one another by a Hamming distance: the number of bit positions in which two codewords differ. When a received word violates the code’s constraints, the receiver can detect an error. If the constraints provide enough information, a decoder may also determine which valid codeword was probably sent.

For a code with minimum Hamming distance d, the guaranteed limits are:

Why a parity check detects errors but does not fix them

A simple parity scheme adds a bit so the total number of 1-bits is even, or alternatively odd. If a single bit changes, the parity test fails and the receiver knows something is wrong. But one parity result does not say which bit changed, so it cannot correct the error on its own. It can also miss an even number of flipped bits, because the parity may still match.

More elaborate arrangements of parity constraints can provide enough information to locate a limited number of errors. The MIT textbook excerpt, for example, describes a 7-bit code that represents 4 data bits and corrects a one-bit error.

Common methods and what they do

Method Main role What to know
Parity Detects some errors A single parity check detects any single-bit error, but cannot correct it and may miss an even number of flipped bits.
CRC Detects corruption A cyclic redundancy check tests data for corruption. Detection is separate from any correction or retransmission that follows.
Hamming code Corrects a limited number of bit errors Parity constraints are arranged to help locate errors. The elementary 7-bit example corrects one error in a 4-bit data value.
Reed–Solomon Corrects symbol errors or erasures in suitable configurations RFC 5510 specifies Reed–Solomon forward error-correction schemes for packet-erasure channels. Its described schemes can recover source symbols from a sufficient set of received symbols.
LDPC Supports iterative decoding for communication links IEEE identifies LDPC use in Wi-Fi 802.11n/ac/ax, 5G NR, and DVB-S2.

These methods address different error models and system constraints; there is no universally best code. The right choice depends on whether data is flipped, arrives in bursts, or is lost as packets, as well as the required redundancy, latency, implementation limits, and ability to request another transmission.

How systems recover: FEC, ARQ, and HARQ

  • Forward error correction (FEC) adds enough redundancy for a receiver to correct some errors without feedback or retransmission. It is useful when waiting for another copy is impractical or costly.
  • Automatic repeat request (ARQ) detects a problem and requests retransmission. It relies on a return path and time for another attempt.
  • Hybrid ARQ (HARQ) combines forward error correction with retransmission, using both local decoding and additional transmitted information or another attempt.

Some links layer these approaches. In PCI-SIG’s September 27, 2020 description of PCIe 6.0, a 256-byte FLIT contains 242 bytes of payload protected by 8 bytes of CRC; the 250 bytes of payload and CRC are then protected by 6 bytes of FEC. If the CRC check fails, the link layer can retry. These are PCIe 6.0-specific figures, not a general overhead rule. The PCI-SIG webinar Q&A explains the distinction between FEC’s correction role and CRC’s error-detection role.

Where error detection and correction are used

These ideas appear in digital communications such as Wi-Fi, 5G, and satellite links; in ECC memory; in storage systems; and in deep-space telemetry. In a different kind of channel, RFC 5510 specifies Reed–Solomon FEC for packet erasures, where a packet is either received without corruption or discarded. The schemes can reconstruct source symbols when enough of the encoded symbols arrive; this is a defined protocol use case, not a universal recommendation for every channel.

Quantum error correction also uses encoding and syndrome measurements, but classical correction should not be transferred directly to an unknown quantum state. IEEE describes quantum codes as protecting logical qubits through those quantum-specific mechanisms.

How to choose an approach

Start with the failure and recovery conditions rather than choosing a code by name. A system that can request another packet has a different set of trade-offs from one that must recover immediately with no feedback.

  1. Characterize the errors: determine whether the problem is bit flips, burst corruption, or missing packets.
  2. Decide what recovery means: identify whether it is enough to detect corruption, whether local correction is required, or whether retransmission is available.
  3. Balance redundancy and latency: more check information may enable recovery but consumes capacity; retransmission can add delay.
  4. Check the code’s limits: use its guaranteed detection or correction bound, and plan how the system behaves when corruption exceeds that bound.
  5. Account for implementation constraints: decoding complexity and the surrounding protocol affect what is practical.
