Squarespace’s catalog lists 42 portfolio designs, but it does not rank a definitive top 12. The 12 options below are an editorial shortlist—not official winners or templates tested against one another. Choose by how you need to show your projects, then preview your finalists with your own images and representative text before starting a site.
What to prioritize in a Squarespace portfolio template
A template is the visual starting point; a portfolio page is the structure that organizes your work. Squarespace describes a portfolio site as a way to present your work and make it easy for people to see who you are and what you have done. In practice, consider these questions before choosing a design:
- What does your work need? Image-led projects may call for prominent imagery, while work that needs context benefits from clear titles and room for descriptions or case-study material.
- How should visitors browse? Decide whether you want people to scan a grid of featured images or follow project links in a more list-like arrangement.
- How many projects will you organize? A portfolio page can hold up to 60 projects. Plan how to group your work before building a large collection: Squarespace says projects cannot be moved between portfolio pages.
- Will the portfolio make sense on a phone? Check that project titles and navigation remain clear when the layout stacks into one column.
Squarespace’s Building a portfolio site guide explains how portfolio pages and projects work.

How a Squarespace portfolio page differs from a template
The catalog design and portfolio structure are related but separate choices. A portfolio page is a landing page that links to individual projects. Squarespace offers grid and hover formats for presenting featured images or project links; an individual project can include page sections, galleries, and other content. That means your choice is not just about the catalog design: you also need to decide how visitors will browse the portfolio and what each project page needs to contain.
Rank #2
Because projects cannot be moved between portfolio pages, think through your collections before you create a large portfolio. A single page’s limit is 60 projects; if you anticipate organizing more work, plan a suitable structure before populating it.

- Open the template store and inspect candidates. Start with the designs that seem compatible with your intended project structure, then preview each before starting a site.
- Use representative content. Try several real images, a typical project title, and the amount of explanatory text you expect to publish. A catalog thumbnail alone cannot show how your work will read in context.
- Compare browsing, not just appearance. Check whether the portfolio overview helps visitors locate a project and whether the project page can present its supporting material clearly.
- Check mobile behavior. Squarespace says portfolio layouts stack into one column on mobile. Hover effects are unsupported on most mobile browsers, so titles configured to appear only after hover may be hidden. Set titles to appear before hover and inspect the mobile result.
- Choose the design that serves your content. Squarespace says sites include built-in design tools, so treat the template as a starting point rather than assuming its initial presentation is fixed.
