There is no single watchlist every programmer needs to complete. These films and series are worth choosing for different reasons: some satirize startup life, some dramatize computing history or cybersecurity, and others invite discussion about social media, privacy, and AI. Treat them as entertainment and conversation starters—not substitutes for technical training or neutral records of how the industry works.

Software startups and tech-industry satire
Silicon Valley
This comedy follows a programmer-founded startup and the ambition surrounding a compression algorithm. TIME’s 2014 review describes the show’s premise and startup arc, while the EngineeringKiosk engineering-media catalog categorizes it under startups, comedy, satire, and the tech industry. It is useful for opening conversations about company culture, product ambitions, and the gap between a technical idea and a business—not as a neutral account of how startups operate.

Computing history through fictional drama
Halt and Catch Fire
Set in the 1980s personal-computer era, this drama gives programmers and other technology workers a character-focused story about the period. The Television Academy discusses Cameron Howe as a programmer and Donna Clark as a programmer in her own right. AMC describes the first season’s effort to reverse engineer an IBM PC as fictional, so the plot should not be mistaken for a factual account of that work. The show is best approached as historical fiction, not a documentary or technical guide.

Cybersecurity and hacking as drama
Mr. Robot
Mr. Robot centers on a programmer who becomes a vigilante hacker. GovTech Singapore includes it in a technology-themed viewing guide under cybersecurity and hackers, and Universal Pictures At Home describes the show’s central premise. It can make security topics compelling, but it is a scripted drama: it is not a lab manual, a complete picture of professional security work, or instruction for carrying out attacks.
Universal Pictures At Home confirms Mr. Robot: The Complete Series on DVD and Blu-ray. Check the current listing, edition details, and region compatibility before purchasing.
Social media, data, and public life
The Great Hack and The Social Dilemma
These two works offer different formats for discussing social platforms and their effects. The Great Hack is a documentary focused on data use and democracy. The Social Dilemma uses a docu-drama format to examine social media and everyday life. They work well as discussion starters about data, platform influence, and the relationship between technology and public life; distinguish their documentary and dramatized elements rather than treating both as the same kind of evidence.

Speculative fiction for technology and ethics discussions
Black Mirror
This anthology uses standalone speculative stories to imagine technology’s effects on people and society. Episodes can prompt debate about privacy, incentives, and unintended consequences. Their scenarios are fiction, not forecasts.
Westworld
Westworld explores fictional questions about AI, sentience, and predictive decisions. It is a useful choice when the goal is to discuss where people might draw ethical boundaries around imagined systems; its scenarios should not be read as predictions of what technology will do.
