Denuvo, Steam’s DRM wrapper, Epic Online Services and GOG’s DRM-free policy do different jobs. Denuvo is anti-tamper protection; Steam’s wrapper checks ownership and supports platform integration; Epic Online Services provide online features; and GOG requires games to work without DRM. The practical differences are game-specific activation rules, offline access and what the available evidence can—and cannot—say about performance.
How Denuvo differs from other DRM and online services
“DRM” is often used as a catch-all, but the tools in this comparison are not interchangeable. Some verify ownership, some aim to make tampering harder, and some deliver multiplayer or social features. GOG’s policy is a distribution requirement, not a protection system.
| Approach | What it does | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Denuvo Anti-Tamper | Anti-tamper protection used in individual games. | Activation and installation terms depend on the game. One published SEGA EULA describes possible online activation and installation limits; that does not establish the terms for every Denuvo game. SEGA’s EULA for the cited game |
| Steam DRM wrapper | Ownership checking and Steamworks integration. | Valve says the wrapper can deter extremely casual copying but is not, by itself, an anti-piracy solution and can be removed by a motivated attacker. Valve’s Steam DRM documentation |
| Epic Online Services | Developer services for accounts, multiplayer, social features, data and trust and safety. | These are online services, not anti-tamper protection or DRM. Epic says most services have no royalty or hosting fees under its free license; additional anti-cheat support and features require an enterprise agreement. Epic’s FAQ · Licensing terms |
| GOG DRM-free policy | A storefront requirement that games not depend on technical DRM restrictions. | Offline-capable single-player content should work without Galaxy or an internet connection; online features still require connectivity. Does Denuvo hurt game performance?
The evidence here does not support a blanket claim that Denuvo always reduces performance by a fixed amount. The result could depend on the particular game and system, and the available academic search result—a thesis in the Theseus university repository—does not expose enough methods or findings to responsibly report a conclusion or number. Read the thesis PDF.
For a specific title, a useful performance claim needs a controlled comparison of the same game under comparable conditions, with the protection state and test setup identified. A general statement about Denuvo is not a substitute for that evidence.

Can you play a Denuvo game offline?
There is no single offline rule established for every Denuvo-protected game. The relevant terms are the individual game’s, and they may describe activation requirements or installation limits. For example, the cited SEGA EULA says first-launch or installation activation may require an internet connection and may limit installations. That example applies to that game’s published terms, not automatically to other titles; requirements may also change over time. Check the SEGA EULA.
Before relying on offline play, check the game’s current EULA and publisher or developer support information for activation, reactivation and installation rules. Do not assume that a game’s store or launcher behavior tells the whole story.

What Steam DRM does—and what it does not do
Valve describes its Steam DRM wrapper as an ownership-check and Steamworks integration layer. Valve also explicitly says the wrapper alone is not an anti-piracy solution: it can deter extremely casual copying, but a motivated attacker can remove it. That is Valve’s description of its own wrapper, not an independent comparative security test. Steam DRM documentation.

So Steam DRM should not be treated as another name for Denuvo. A game may use platform features or a wrapper for one purpose and separate anti-tamper protection for another; the exact setup depends on the game.

Which option supports offline, launcher-independent play?
GOG’s DRM-free games
GOG’s developer requirements say games should have no DRM or copy-protection restrictions and should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, whether the Galaxy client is present, or internet availability. Its quality-assurance guidance specifies that offline-capable single-player content should work without Galaxy or an internet connection. Multiplayer and other online features still need connectivity. GOG’s porting guidance · GOG’s quality-assurance guidance.
This is a storefront policy for games distributed there, not a general promise about every game sold elsewhere. GOG’s developer documentation explains the platform context.

Games with activation or online-service dependencies
For games using third-party activation or online services, offline availability depends on the individual game’s design and terms. An online service such as account management or multiplayer is not necessarily a copy-protection system, but its online features cannot work without a connection.

What to do if activation or an installation limit blocks you
- Find the affected game’s current terms. Look for its EULA and publisher or developer support page; a single game’s terms cannot establish the rules for another title.
- Check whether the issue concerns activation, installation count or an online feature. These are different problems, and an online-service outage is not automatically a DRM failure.
- Contact the game’s publisher or developer for account, activation or limit issues. Valve’s third-party game support guidance directs players to the relevant publisher or developer for support with third-party games. Valve’s third-party game support page.
