A browser using 15 GB of RAM is a warning sign to investigate—not proof that one browser setting caused the spike or that a particular fix will reclaim a specific amount. Start by finding the tab or background task using memory, then reduce unnecessary work and adjust inactive-tab controls. The exact browser, computer, and measurement behind the 15 GB figure are not established, so the steps below are a diagnosis guide, not a claim to reproduce that result.

Why is your browser using so much memory?

Memory use can come from many sources: open tabs, web apps, background pages, and extensions all contribute to the browser’s workload. A high total does not identify the culprit by itself. Google’s troubleshooting guidance for managed Chrome on Windows also lists insufficient system memory and graphics or driver issues as possible contributors; that guidance is scoped to managed Windows environments, not a consumer benchmark. See Google’s Chrome performance troubleshooting guide.

Begin with the browser’s own task list rather than closing tabs at random. That makes it easier to distinguish a memory-heavy page from a background process or an extension.

How do you find which Chrome tab is using the most memory?

  1. In desktop Chrome, open More tools > Task Manager.
  2. Select the Memory column to sort tasks by memory use.
  3. Inspect tabs, background pages, and other listed tasks. If one item stands out, investigate that page or extension before ending it.
  4. End a task only if you can afford to lose any unsaved work in it. Google warns that ending a task can discard unsaved state.

Google’s Chrome performance help also recommends closing tabs you do not need, turning off or removing unwanted extensions, and avoiding multiple apps running at once. Make one change at a time and check memory use again so you can tell what helped.

How do you reduce Chrome memory usage?

Close tabs and trim extensions

Close pages you are finished with. Disable or remove extensions you do not use, then compare the browser’s memory use. Extensions can add workload, but the task list and a change-and-check approach are more useful than assuming every extension is a problem.

Use Memory Saver for inactive tabs

On desktop Chrome, open Settings > Performance and find Memory Saver. Google documents three levels: Moderate, Balanced (recommended), and Maximum. Memory Saver deactivates inactive tabs; when you return to one, it reloads. If a page must remain active for your workflow, add it under Always keep these sites active.

Some tabs may remain active because they are playing audio or video, handling a call or screen share, showing notifications, downloading a file, containing a partially filled form, pinned, or connected to a device. That is why Memory Saver may not deactivate every tab. Chrome’s performance personalization help documents these controls and their trade-offs.

Check a tab’s memory before suspending more

Chrome can show memory use in a tab’s hover card. Configure the display under Settings > Appearance; the wording varies by desktop platform. This is a quick way to spot a tab worth investigating without changing how all inactive tabs behave.

Test page preloading separately

Chrome preloads pages to make browsing and searching faster. In Settings > Performance, review Preload pages. If memory pressure matters more than the speed benefit, try a less aggressive option or turn preloading off, then compare your own usage. Google describes the setting but does not quantify how much RAM changing it saves, so treat it as an experiment rather than a guaranteed fix.

Does Chrome Memory Saver actually close tabs?

No. Google describes Memory Saver as deactivating inactive tabs, not closing them. A deactivated tab reloads when you open it again, which can interrupt a workflow or require a page to restore its state. Keep essential sites active if they need to stay responsive, and expect that more aggressive deactivation can mean more reloads.

What are the alternatives in Microsoft Edge?

Edge offers sleeping tabs and, in Edge 125 or later as described by Microsoft in May 2024, RAM resource controls. These features have different behavior and should not be treated as a promise that a chosen limit will always be enforced.

Sleeping tabs

Microsoft says Edge 105 began automatically sleeping high-resource tabs when device memory neared its limit. In a December 6, 2022 post, the Microsoft Edge Team reported that a sleeping tab saved “83% of its memory on average.” That is a vendor-reported average, not an independent benchmark or a prediction for an individual computer. The same post reported that Edge slept 1.38 billion tabs in September 2022; that is a historical Microsoft-reported count, not a current usage statistic. Microsoft’s explanation of the feature and its figures is at Sleeping Tabs in Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft distinguishes a sleeping tab, which resumes without a full reload, from a discarded tab, which must reload. The distinction matters when returning to a page with unsaved or temporary state.

RAM resource controls

Microsoft introduced Edge resource controls in Edge Beta 125 and described them in a May 2, 2024 post. Find them under Settings > System and performance. In the documented configuration, the default controls RAM only while PC gaming; choosing Always applies the control outside gaming as well.

When Edge reaches the selected limit, it may sleep or discard more tabs. A limit set too low can slow browsing, and Microsoft notes that usage may sometimes appear above the selected amount because the control attempts—but cannot always guarantee—to stay below it. See Microsoft’s Edge resource-controls explanation.

Should you upgrade RAM if your browser is slow?

Consider a hardware upgrade only after checking whether the whole computer is short on available memory—not just because the browser reports a large number. Close unnecessary apps, inspect browser tasks, and try the browser’s built-in controls first. Google’s managed-Windows troubleshooting guidance identifies insufficient system memory as one possible cause of Chrome performance problems, but it does not establish that inadequate installed RAM caused the 15 GB example.

If system-wide memory pressure remains after reducing workload, check your computer’s exact model and compatibility before buying RAM. The available evidence does not support a universal capacity or module recommendation.
