Dropped items in Minecraft despawn after 6,000 game ticks—five minutes of active ticking in a loaded, entity-ticking chunk. That is not always five minutes on a real-world clock: when the chunk stops ticking, the timer pauses. Mobs follow different rules, and hazards can destroy items sooner.
How long do dropped items last?
The standard lifetime for an ordinary dropped item entity is 6,000 game ticks, equivalent to five minutes while its chunk is loaded and processing entities. This figure is documented by the Minecraft Wiki’s item reference; it is a game-reference source rather than a current official player guide.
The timer is tied to game processing, not simply to how much time passes in the real world. If the item’s chunk unloads or stops ticking, its countdown pauses. When that chunk is processed again, the remaining time can continue.

It depends on whether the chunk containing the loot is still ticking. If no player or other game system keeps it active, leaving the area can pause the item timer. Returning later may let the countdown resume, but this does not protect loot from fire, lava, cactus, explosions, or other damage.

In Bedrock Edition, simulation distance determines how far from a player the game processes mechanics and entity behavior. Render distance controls what is drawn, so seeing an area—or having it within render distance—does not by itself mean its entities are being simulated. Microsoft’s simulation-distance documentation, last updated September 23, 2025, describes a four-chunk default and a configurable maximum of 12 chunks in the documented Bedrock context. Actual settings can vary by world and server.
What if you died and need to recover your inventory?
- Head back promptly. The five-minute figure measures active ticking, not necessarily time spent away in real life.
- Check the route and drop location for hazards. Lava, fire, cactus, and explosions can destroy items independently of the natural despawn timer.
- Consider whether the area was simulating. In Bedrock, simulation distance—not merely render distance—determines where entity behavior and game mechanics are processed.
- Account for your edition and world setup. Server configuration, add-ons, and updates may affect what happens in a particular world.
Do mobs despawn after five minutes?
No. The 6,000-tick rule is for dropped item entities; it is not a universal mob countdown. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes describe natural mob despawning in relation to distance and simulation, with persistence cases and exceptions. Exact behavior depends on the mob, edition, and version.

Some interactions or conditions—such as naming a mob with a name tag, taming it, or breeding it—can make it persistent in the cases described by those notes. Do not use the dropped-item timer to predict whether a particular mob will remain.

Nether stars
The Minecraft Wiki’s Nether Star reference describes an edition-specific exception: a Nether Star dropped by a dying Wither in Java Edition has a ten-minute timer. A Nether Star dropped by another method follows the ordinary five-minute rule. In Bedrock Edition, Nether Stars do not naturally despawn.

Environmental destruction
Natural despawning is not the only way to lose an item. Fire, lava, cactus, and explosions can destroy dropped items before their timer expires.
Custom Bedrock items
Creators can set the minecraft:should_despawn component to control whether a custom Bedrock item eventually despawns. Microsoft’s item-component documentation applies to format version 1.20.30 and later. It describes a creator option, not a normal-player setting for changing the vanilla item timer.

Why might an item disappear sooner or last longer?
- It disappeared sooner: a hazard may have destroyed it, or the item may have been affected by a server setting, add-on, or version-specific behavior.
- It lasted longer than five real-world minutes: its chunk may have stopped ticking, pausing the countdown.
- It was a Nether Star: its natural lifetime depends on the edition and how it was dropped.
- You mean a mob: mob despawning is governed by different rules and is not explained by the dropped-item timer.
For a specific discrepancy, check the edition, game version, server configuration, and any add-ons in use. The cited mob rules are from Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes, not a complete current comparison of every mob across Java and Bedrock.
