To make your GitHub profile show your best work, write a focused profile README, pin a few role-relevant repositories, and make each featured project easy to understand. A separate GitHub Pages site is optional: add one only if it improves how people browse or evaluate your work.
What should your GitHub profile say first?
Your profile is the introduction; pinned repositories are the evidence. GitHub displays a profile README at the top of your profile page, where it can provide context that repository cards do not. Use that first screen to tell a visitor what kind of developer you are, what work you are seeking, and where to find examples that support those claims. GitHub Docs: About your profile
GitHub’s resume tutorial suggests a concise bio and a profile README covering an introduction, skills, professional experience, selected projects, and achievements. Treat those as useful options, not a checklist to fill mechanically. Be specific and supportable: instead of an unexplained list of technologies, connect tools to work you have done or want to do. Which repositories should you feature?
GitHub allows up to six pinned repositories and gists combined. Its resume tutorial suggests highlighting three to five projects, selected for relevance to the role you want. Choose projects that demonstrate complementary strengths when those strengths matter to your target role. A finished personal project, a meaningful contribution to a collaborative project, and a project showing a relevant specialty can make a more useful selection than several similar exercises. How do you make a featured repository easy to evaluate?
Do not make a hiring manager infer what a repository does from its name or source code. GitHub recommends a README for every repository to help people understand and navigate the work. For each project you pin, use the README to answer the practical questions a visitor is likely to have:

- What problem does it address? Explain the purpose and intended user.
- What did you build or contribute? Distinguish your work from the project’s broader scope, especially for collaborations.
- What choices matter? Briefly explain important implementation decisions or constraints that help someone assess the work.
- How can someone try it? Link to a live demo or provide clear setup and run instructions when appropriate.

No. A profile README and well-documented repositories can form a complete portfolio. GitHub Pages is an optional static-hosting layer for publishing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript from a repository, sometimes after a build process. It can be useful when a visual case study, custom navigation, or a more deliberate presentation makes your work easier to browse. For a user or organization site, the repository name follows the account name with .github.io. A project site appears under the account’s Pages domain and repository path. GitHub Pages recognizes index.html, index.md, or README.md as an entry file. Availability and plan eligibility can vary, so check GitHub’s current setup documentation for your account and repository. What should you know before publishing with Pages?
Pages supports HTTPS and custom domains. A custom domain is optional; GitHub recommends verifying it before adding it to a repository to reduce the risk of domain takeover. Pages sites are publicly available on the internet, including sites published from private repositories under plans that allow private Pages publishing. GitHub’s Pages limits documentation lists a 1 GB published-site size cap, a 10-minute deployment timeout, a soft 100 GB monthly bandwidth limit, and a soft 10-builds-per-hour limit. The build-limit exception applies to custom GitHub Actions workflows. These operational limits can change; consult the current documentation before publishing if your site approaches them.
