Dynamic graphics switching is a laptop feature that chooses between integrated graphics (iGPU) and a discrete graphics processor (dGPU), usually to balance battery use and graphics performance. The term can describe either which GPU renders an application or which GPU sends the image to the display—two different things that are easy to confuse.
What dynamic graphics switching means
Integrated graphics is built into the processor and is generally suited to everyday tasks with lower power demands. A discrete GPU is a separate graphics processor that can provide more graphics performance for demanding applications, but typically uses more power. Switching lets a laptop use the iGPU for lighter work and call on the dGPU when an application can benefit from it. NVIDIA describes this arrangement in its Optimus overview.
There is no single cross-vendor implementation established by the phrase “dynamic graphics switching.” Laptop makers and software may use labels such as hybrid graphics, switchable graphics, Optimus, or a graphics MUX. The label alone does not tell you how the laptop routes its display signal.

Rendering and display routing are not the same
Render switching in muxless Optimus
In a muxless NVIDIA Optimus setup, the dGPU can render an application’s graphics while the iGPU remains responsible for sending the image to the screen. The NVIDIA driver can recognize applications suited to the dGPU, wake it from idle, and transfer its rendered output through the iGPU. When demanding graphics work is not needed, the dGPU can be powered down and the iGPU can handle rendering and display.

So, choosing the dGPU for an application does not necessarily mean it is directly connected to the laptop’s internal display. NVIDIA’s Linux driver documentation explains that a display multiplexer may be needed to connect an internal panel to the NVIDIA GPU.
Display switching with a MUX or Advanced Optimus
A hardware MUX changes which GPU is connected to a display. NVIDIA Advanced Optimus adds a hardware-based dynamic display switch that can let a supported GeForce GPU drive the internal panel directly, rather than routing display output through integrated graphics. NVIDIA says this can improve performance and latency and supports G-SYNC displays; these capabilities apply only to laptops that implement and support Advanced Optimus.

NVIDIA reported frame-rate increases of 11% to 27% or more across a range of games in its 2022 Advanced Optimus article. That is NVIDIA’s own benchmark claim, not a general result for every laptop, game, or configuration. The article’s description of the feature is available in NVIDIA’s Advanced Optimus announcement.
How to tell what a laptop actually supports
Terms like “hybrid graphics” or “switchable graphics” do not, by themselves, confirm a user-controllable MUX or Advanced Optimus. Check the specifications for the exact laptop configuration, not just the product family name.

- Internal display: Look for explicit confirmation that the laptop has a MUX or Advanced Optimus and that its panel can be driven directly by the dGPU.
- External video ports: Check the wiring for the exact model and port. Depending on the laptop variant, an external connector may be connected to the iGPU, the dGPU, or a mix of both; the Debian Optimus wiki discusses this variation.
- Operating system and drivers: Confirm that the feature and application-level GPU selection are supported by the laptop’s operating system and drivers. NVIDIA’s Linux installation guide documents selecting an application to run on the discrete GPU and checking its runtime power state.
- Exact configuration: Panel options, ports, and feature availability can vary within a product line and by region. For example, Acer announced Advanced Optimus for the Nitro 17 AN17-72 but cautioned that specifications and availability vary by region; that announcement does not establish support for every Nitro 17 configuration. See Acer’s announcement.
What the term may mean in firmware
“Dynamic graphics” may also appear as a BIOS or UEFI energy-saving setting rather than as the name of a particular display-switching technology. A 2017 NSA guidance document uses “Optimus / Dynamic graphics” in this firmware-setting sense. That older reference illustrates why the label alone is not enough to identify a laptop’s hardware behavior; the exact model documentation is more useful.

If you mainly want lower power use for everyday tasks, ordinary hybrid graphics can let the laptop rely on integrated graphics when the dGPU is not needed. If you want the internal display connected directly to the dGPU, or need a particular monitor feature, verify that the exact model supports a MUX or Advanced Optimus and that the relevant display or port uses that route. These are compatibility questions, not a universal ranking: the best configuration depends on your priorities, operating system, drivers, display, and port wiring.
