A channel partner program is a vendor’s framework for recruiting, enabling, supporting, and managing outside organizations that help market, sell, deliver, or support its products or services. The partner is the participating organization; the program sets the terms, resources, and processes for working together.

What does a channel partner program include?

A program translates a vendor’s channel strategy into practical rules and support for external partners. Depending on the vendor and the route to market, it may cover:

  • Eligibility, enrollment, and partner responsibilities.
  • Partner tiers and qualification criteria, if the vendor uses tiers.
  • Commercial benefits or support, such as discounts, incentives, deal registration, or co-selling.
  • Training, certification, product information, and marketing resources.
  • Partner portals, lead sharing, and communication processes.
  • Performance expectations and how vendor and partner responsibilities are coordinated.

These are common components, not universal requirements. A vendor may sell primarily through partners or combine its partner channel with direct sales. TechTarget describes a partner program as a vendor business strategy for encouraging partners to recommend or sell its products and services (TechTarget, August 16, 2018).

Which organizations can be channel partners?

A channel partner is an outside organization that works with a producer to help market, sell, or deliver an offering. Depending on the product and the work involved, partners can include:

  • Resellers and value-added resellers (VARs).
  • Distributors.
  • Managed service providers (MSPs).
  • Systems integrators (SIs) and consultants.
  • Independent software vendors (ISVs).

Not every vendor works with every type of partner. The mix depends on the offering, route to market, and expertise or services needed. See TechTarget’s channel-partner definition, dated September 4, 2025.

How can a program benefit each side?

For the vendor

Partners can extend a vendor’s reach and selling or delivery capacity by bringing existing customer relationships, local knowledge, or specialist expertise. A channel partner program provides a structure for coordinating that work.

For the partner

Participation may provide access to vendor training, product and technical support, marketing resources, and commercial opportunities. The value depends on the fit between the offering and the partner’s business, the actual program terms, and how well both sides execute; participation does not guarantee growth.

What is one example of a channel partner program?

AWS Marketplace Channel is a named example: AWS says it simplifies how AWS Partners work together to sell software. It illustrates one program model, not a requirement that channel programs use a marketplace. Program details can change, so check the official AWS Marketplace Channel page for current terms.

What should you compare when evaluating programs?

If you are considering a specific vendor program, compare its written terms and operating practices rather than relying on the program name or tier labels. Focus on:

  • Who is eligible and what ongoing requirements apply.
  • How tiers are earned and maintained, if tiers exist.
  • How discounts, margins, and incentives work.
  • Whether deal registration or lead-sharing rules protect partner involvement and clarify ownership.
  • What training, certifications, marketing resources, and co-selling support are available.
  • What technical and customer support partners can access.
  • Which partner types and geographies are covered.
  • How responsibilities, performance expectations, and channel conflicts are handled.

Partner-program types and benefits vary by vendor; Salesforce’s guide discusses these differences and the role of partner relationship management software (Salesforce, May 19, 2026). Confirm current conditions on the vendor’s official program pages before committing, because requirements and benefits can change.
